My mother is 73 and renews her insurance, most years, by shopping round.
My daughter has renewed it for her at some stage bu this year, she completed a proposal of over 9 years NCD on the basis she has never claimed in that period and assumed that's what it was.
However, on chasing her last insurer, it came in with 5 years NCD and she can only assume that my daughter may have [put that in, at some point, given the general understanding is that 5 years is the maximum anyway.

Needless to say, they nailed her for an additional £100 plus quid, which she finds annoying as she could have got a cheaper premium elsewhere, regardless, even with 5 years NCD. Needless to say thay wanted £70 to cancel it making it not really worth it.

I told her to take it to the Insurance Ombudsman. Is this realistic?

Can't you cancel any policy before the cooling off period ends with no fee involved?.. £70 is a bit much imo. Swinto want £50 from me but other companies I've used have wanted nothing.

Possibly but we're past that now, I think.
She only tells me when it's too late.

It's another disgusting scam of the insurance companies and one I have complained to the ombudsman about.
Some insurers that accept >5years will accept the 9 years if you keep the previous years' documents and have had no claims.

They should ban no claims bonus and replace it with a much fairer claims penalty.

Don't give up. A stiff letter to the company via normal channels first. If no result escalate.

We just chased down an unexpected private hospital charge, £300+, that we believed was covered by the insurance policy. By the time the top person gets involved it's all apologies and charge written off. It took 3 letters though. Also sometimes if you are diligent in following the process they trip upon their own service level commitments. I was in dispute with the water company recently. They ended up missing their response commitments to my letters. Cost them £25 each time on top of the compensation I won.

Is it worth the hassle for £100?

I'd personally be happy they didn't simply cancel the policy when they found out the wrong information was given. That can cause a whole world of other problems.

I had this and ended up chasing 2 companies back.

The problem appears to be Insurance companies computer systems. Some only record a max of 5 years. Bingo your next insurer only then has proof of 5 years. So the issue is with your previous insurers.

I ended up ringing round a few companies trying to trace my NCD of 9+ years from 2 years previous, so they could tell my old insurers, who then told my new insurers.
