Bilt Hamer Deox-C

As you're about to learn, i've never studied chemistry

I tried half a 1L tub of Bilt Hamber Deox-C into a 10L bucket of hot water. When stirred it turns clear, looks just like water. There's no smell. I popped some rusty brake calipers & carriers in it overnight. It worked. That's understatement of the century but you can search online for all the superlatives, that's not why i'm posting.

So here's my burning question, what's this stuff made of? I've used all sorts of aggressive and nasty chemicals before and had significantly lesser results. This Bilt Hamber stuff is:

• Non toxic
• Non harmful to the environment
• The COSHH datasheet says something like "all ingredients are suitable for human consumption, large quantities may make you unwell"

So what exactly is this wonder product made of? It's more effective than the nasty acids i'd previously used for rust removal, yet it appears to be made of fairy dust. What gives? How can this be possible.

To my mind if something is this effective, there has to be a down side. It's even cheap (under £15 delivered next day by opie oils).

I believe it's citric acid. That's based on buying some Deox-C, and also buying some citric acid powder, not any kind of technical or scientific analysis (except that's perhaps what the C stands for). The powder looks the same, and the process and results are pretty much identical as well.

Citric acid powder is way cheaper, especially when you start to buy in larger quantities.

Citric acid but with some detergents/surface tension reducers IIRC.
