They were still free a few weeks ago, although there's a couple of 'value added' things you can do - it's a bit like installing free software, you have to look for the free version button, but the 'premium' button is front and centre, along with the stty Ask Jeeves toolbar thing.

I used it a month or two back and it was free, but you can pay a bit extra to keep it at the top. I did and the car sold quickly so can't moan

I believe it's only the first advert (or two) that are free of charge in the motors category, after that you have to pay to list them.

Not sure there would be anything to stop you using a different email address to register a fresh account with gumtree and then listing it for free?

Nothing stopping this, have a few myself for this reason
