Just had a letter saying my new purchase needs one due to the car being uneconomical to repair at some point.
Because I bought the car cheap I never bothered checking vin or engine numbers and now have nothing to check against because the owner has sent log book off.before I pay for the vosa check is there anyway I can check if there in order. Any advice would be helpful

You'll still have the new owners green slip thing though?
Sounds like you've bought an insurance write off, needs to be VIC checked which is a fairly straightforward procedure, nearest VOSA centre for an hour and off you go
The logbook will (when it comes back and has had the VIC) state it was a write off and the class (D/C etc)
Sometimes people accidentally lose the logbooks when selling a car they know might have been written off in the past and claim that it's only £25 for a new one. Other times people mention it upfront.
