Mk3 RS turbo Escort. - Worth it?
Discussion
Research, a lot.
Lots of replicas and piles of pure crap out there.
All S1s are white, unless of course it has been repainted or you manage to somehow get Princess Dianas black one.
S1s are the more valuable and I think always will be. Try an RS1600i too.
Get on the owners club, they have a good register of a lot of the cars.
Look for rot, you wouldn't believe how much escorts rot, everywhere.
Good luck and take your time if you want one.

Its not white with blue stickers. So I guess it makes it a Mk4. I would imagine, value wise, a Mk3 would be better but I don't know enough about the Classic ford market to make an informed decision.
S2 = £2-5kS1 = £5-10k
www.passionford.com would be a good starting point
Regarding rot watch the battery trays, these were a problem when the cars were only 5 years old.
Never really liked them that much to be honest, wheezy, tappety, laggy CVH engine but as others have said, the passion for old Fords seems to do wonders for prices and collectability. On the other hand I really wouldn't be able to say no to an RS1600i, a bit more special in my opinion.

RS turbo mk4 = dreadfull pile of over priced, over rated, rotten crap.
They were not very good when new, so 24-28 yrs later they really are not worth bothering with, as said above, cvh engine was a horrible wheezy rattly thing, crap brakes, dreadfull hard suspension, and heavy steering with no PAS.
Roll on 22-28 years (many of which years they would have been owned/thrashed/abused by chavs) and you have a recipe for a complete pile of unreliable rotten crap.
I speak from painful experience of buying one recently (as could not afford one when they were new) so always fancied one) but they have not aged well.
Buy a Golf Gti instead.

Honestly, if you don't know enough about the cars that you have to think about whether it's a mk3 or 4 then you don't want one in your life. There are so many different things that make these cars either worth money or peanuts and they normally come in fairly standard guise with a bit of amateur modding which makes them unreliable and prone to destruction.

I somewhat agree with you on some things you have said ,but as a motoring forum these cars in their day where the dogs, they had the looks and the performance to match ,agreed most out there have been hammered ,but there are a few gems as more collectors cars than everyday drivers. They were not very good when new, so 24-28 yrs later they really are not worth bothering with, as said above, cvh engine was a horrible wheezy rattly thing, crap brakes, dreadfull hard suspension, and heavy steering with no PAS.

Sorry you had a bad one, it happens ,look at my profile ,according to some I have a pile of crap....it's not I assure you.
I lusted after an S2 back in my younger days but could never afford one back then. The car is a motoring icon and was seriously quick in its day.
I still consider owning one from time to time but worry i will be disappointed with it compared to the modern performance car.
The S1 is a real gem in my eyes and the one to go for but its not for driving anymore, its a classic show car not a daily.

S1 or S2 will only increase in value, barring the zombie apocalypse.
The good ones will, I'd agree. The crappy thrashers will just die off. However, is OP ever going to be able to turn a decent profit on one? As it seems that is how he is trying to justify it to the mrs. If you bought a good one, spent all the money it needed on restoration and maintaining it while waiting for values to increase, you'd probably still end up with a loss. And you wouldn't be able to drive it as intended without wearing it out, not that I think they'd be a great drive these days, for anything other than nostalgic purposes anyway.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
