E36 Brake Light Switch

Evening all.

Had no brake lights on my E36 so bought a new German "meyle" switch, fitted it tonight and now have constant brake lights lol.

Sometimes when I press the pedal in releasing the trigger the brake lights go off but it seems the switch is fecked as it gets very hot.

I removed the switch and tried it in hand and its as if the things bewitched. Very very hot in hand so somethings not right eh!?

MOT in the morning so quite annoyed

Sounds like a dodgy switch, I can't see any other way of a switch getting hot, but also make sure you haven't bent the bracket that it fits into.

Had this on my e36, after two faulty "aftermarket" switches , bought a genuine from BMW.

It may be getting hot because your lights are constantly on so there is constant current through the switch. It would only be designed to pass current for short periods when you apply the brakes. Just a thought and it might be a faulty switch. Are you satisfied that it was fitted correctly? I had no problems when I replaced mine, but it was fiddly to fit right.
