Different advice than HJ please....Buying a Used car...!

Hi All,

I sold my car sometime in Jan and my insurance is on hold so i will have to buy a new car before the insurance gets cancelled in April.

I did look around for a car but it all seems like a massive maze.

I did ask HJ for some advise and i am not saying that the advise is bad but i got a feeling that my choice is still narrowed to honda jazz CRDI or KIA.

So i am running this topic with the good folks of PH to get your views.....

I want a very reliable car . I know that I am going to choose petrol and auto coz I do around 12000 to 15000 miles a year mostly on motor ways and some city driving.

Don't want to spend on DMf and all diesel issues.

Will keep the keep the car for atleast few years and budget is 7000.

The reason I have more saloons listed is because I want to get all the things like buggy in to my car and ride should be codify able on motor ways.

Am I wrong inclining towards the BMW,audi and VW's over Kia, fiesta and jazz.

My order of priorities are reliability, comfort , low maintainence cost,good mpg but I want someone to let me know what would you recommend.

Let me know what car and what mileage should I be looking for with 7000 budget and what would be a good buy even if the car is not on the list.

KIA cee'd or Hyundai i30 1.6CRDI with balance of 7 year or 5 year warranty. They have been very reliable and are chain cam, so no timing belt replacements to worry about. But better to replace the oil and filter every year or every 10k miles rather than every 2 years or 20k miles.

For around your budget and requirements, I hear good things about the KIA cee'd or Hyundai i30 1.6CRDI.

I am increasingly sure Honest John is in the pay of the South Koreans given the frequency with which he recommends a Kia or Hyundai.

I just love the Jazz. Bought my daughter one in 2006 and it has run faultlessly ever since. She has two young children and luggage and even managed to get a sideboard in the damned thing once! Not sure I could do that in my Merc estate! They are a real-life Tardis and well screwed together.

Last ford I owned was a G reg ford Orion. Just bought a 07 Focus and it is a very, very good car indeed. Mk4 Mondeos are HUGE!

Nah, he just understands his target audience.

I met him at an SMMT event a few years back - and he's actually a decent bloke, good to chat cars with.

You have put reliability and cost of ownership as your top priority. Bearing that in mind neither the Audi, BMW or VW are very sensible choices. They're not bad cars, but none are known for low running costs or spectacular reliability.

I would say that, on the whole, either Japanese or Korean with a very long warranty are good suggestions bearing in mind your priorities.
