£20K on car you love or £10K on car you dont?

Which is actually better value, which makes more sense, which would you do?
Quite often in threads theres advice to look at cheaper cars, normally in relation to someone contemplating pricey finance deals, or go the bangernomics route. Spend less on the car we spend many hours a week in to allow more cash for a car we spend much less time in come the weekend.
Is owning a car just about getting the cheapest possible transport, or does it have other values that need to be considered, that we are willing to pay for? Surely we seek an enhanced experience of driving and owning, good design - technical, ergonomic, aesthetic; delivery of performance, handing, quality of materials and yes, image?

Yeah, that's a tricky one.
I WANTED a BMW M3, for £20k with loads of mile on, but settled for an RX-8 (a car I liked but less than the M3) at about £12K with low mileage.
6 years on, I'm still in my RX-8 and happy with my choice.
Would I have liked the M3 more? Who knows, but if it'd been £20K for the M3 or £10K for a Toyota Avensis, then I'd have found the extra somewhere!
