Ultimate Mitsubishi Evo X details
40 cars, 40 years, 440bhp... £50K. Oh.

Appropriately enough, the 40th anniversary special totes 440bhp (446hp or 328kw) produced at 6,800rpm. There's also 412lb ft of torque at 3,100rpm. A host of trick components feature to get that much from a 2.0-litre turbo, including 'motorsport specification' high-flow injectors, a new HKS turbo, an intake, intercooler and exhaust from Janspeed plus tweaks to the ECU.
Mitsubishi has also confirmed the FQ-440 will use the six-speed SST dual-clutch gearbox unavailable on the 400. Mitsubishi hasn't disclosed any tweaks made to handle the increased power and torque.
Other upgrades include Alcon brakes all round with six-piston calipers up front, forged 18-inch BBS wheels and Eibach springs that lower the Evo by 35mm at the front and 30mm at the rear. Don't forget the 'PIAA motorsport silicone windscreen wiper blades' too. Seriously.
Inside the FQ-440 comes with all the equipment any Evo requires. Recaro leather seats, a Rockford Fosgate stereo with eight speakers and a sub (natch), a plethora of airbags and a sat nav. There aren't any pics of the interior but expect it be largely similar to all other Evo Xs.
There is something new though, and rather disconcerting; a data recorder connected via the onboard diagnostic system. It records driving style, performance and location, then will be available to the owner as well as Mitsubishi UK. Moreover, the fitment and recording of data from the device is mandatory for the warranty. Blimey. You think Mitsubishi expects these Evos to be driven hard?
White is the only colour available for the FQ-440 and each of the 40 coming here will cost a nice round £50,000. Don't forget to budget for servicing too, with a 1,000-mile oil change required and then another service every six months or 4,500 miles. Some things never change...
And if £50K seems a little excessive for an Evo, fast and rare though it undoubtedly will be, don't forget to check the classifieds. There aren't any 400s on PH right now, but this manual 360 has a few choice upgrades and this 2010 SST 330 dips in under £20K. Will Mitsubishi find enough aficionados to stump up for the 40th anniversary cars? Time will tell.
"Nothing to hide, nothing to fear," they'll cry. Falsely.
However, they do have 27 preorder deposits already and all deposits need to be in by next Monday! At that point, if they're oversubscribed, it's raffle time! I declined. I was hoping for maybe a 380-400, therefore not needing the SST box or engine to be opened up and keeping the cost down. Under £40k, I'd have given it serious thought, but £50k? For die hard fans only. There are far nicer cars available for that money.
I'll stick with my FQ330 SST, thanks all the same. Though if anyone wants to offer me £18k+ to take it off me, I'll think about it....
The dealer also said they'd all been discussing it and can't think why anyone would buy one....but people are. It also doesn't have the unique styling that the FQ400 could at least boast.

£50k... wow thats a lot, but I don't think anyone in reality is too shocked at that are they ?? Puts it on par price wise with some heavy hitting machinery. Still though maybe it will be special enough to be worth it, lets wait and see.
Don't get me wrong great news to have an Evo back but we're not all Ari Vatanen and the drive to Tesco's with the Mrs and kids on board isn't usually done at 9/10th's. If you want a weapon buy aforementioned polo and something with hardly any body panels for the weekend for that fee. If you do come across a country lane and get the 9/10th's out of it when the boost comes in you'll find yourself suddenly in the Boot of the dawdling half asleep S-max, Cashcow, Juke, Focus, Kia [insert average family car here] in front that you couldn't see from just careering around that blind bend. Time and a place people this is neither a track car nor a road car this is purely Focus RS Pub talk Competitor, Disappointed.
Shame the original Lancer Register rumours of an FQ400 at around £40k didn't come about. I'd have thought more about that.
king grand! They still sell these in Japan, how much would it cost to import a 'normal' Evo X? £30k tops?
Rip off Britain strikes again.
All the same, the time for these cars has passed, and I say that as a former owner and advocate. They're simply of a previous time.
You can get a C63, RS4, M3 etc. with about the same power and an easier life (servicing, build quality, dealer support) for about the same OTR, much less on finance I'd assume.
Can't imagine who'd pick an ancient (chassis is 7 years old), rattly (it's been reported that Mitsubishi are studying 1980s Amstrad stereos for inspiration in improving interior build quality and ergonomics), fragile (I've no doubt that the fundamentals are strong enough, but the paranoia that pervades the thinking behind the servicing and monitoring regime speaks volumes) 4-cyl Mitsubishi anachronism over a modern, discrete 6/8-cyl weapon.
To be fair its one of only 40 in the world but other than fans of the breed it will seem like every other evo out there.
I doubt this will be a future classic as the demand for such cars has fallen. Subaru did the CS400 that was £50k I suspect they are not that now nore are the RB320 cars or the Type 25's.
Still kudos to thopes who buy one I hope the driving data sent to Mitsubishi gives them all a smile.
