Little old lady in the village had her T Reg Merc A Class A160 up for sale, £500 she mentioned in the post office so I enquired a little more. 60k miles from new, full Merc history, elegance trim and as new as the day it rolled out the factory. The front matts still have the plastic film over the metal merc badges that how little she has used it. She claims to be too old to drive it, I gave her want she wanted for it as I didn't have the heart to barter over it. Now I know they are trouble cars and it will break, but using it every morning for my 4 mile commute to the station has been a pleasure every day. The one thing wrong with it is that the radio is stuck on Classic FM, but in a funny way I don't really mind!!

I've mostly had crap cars, and I've loved many of them. I have a 53 reg Mercedes A140 I bought for £600 to use as a daily snotter, and I love how comically awful it is to drive and thinking about the first owner spunking away SO much on such a poor car.Has anyone had a crap car they just love??
Take the rear (and front passenger) seats out, they weigh a tonne and the car is so gutless it makes a big difference. It also turns it into a van you can load up with crap, which amuses me even more considering the badge snobs who bought these things new.
I had a red Toyota Corolla 1.3 of 1986 vintage, in red. I bought it in Toyota matt pink but aday with T-cut and polish had it gleaming like a red tomato. Though only a stop-gap car, it lasted much longer than anticipated, would justa bout clock 100mph on a downhill stretch and was ultra-reliable. I eventually passed it on to my girlfriend who learnt to drive in it and drove it until the cambelt eventually snapped and it died.
On the basis of that, I bought an 88 Carina II 1.6 with 101k on the clock. It drove like clockwork and I sold it about 8 months later for much what I paid for it.

i used to work in Germany and once when the E class they gave me was being serviced I had an A class - jesus! the handling 
This would have been one of the first ones (1999/2000) and I remember nearly rolling it in the company car park. Comedy thing with one of the cheapest nastiest plastic interiors ever. What were MB thinking?

What were MB thinking? I love my 306 more than I probably should. I've had faster, newer and better built cars which have been many times more reliable, but the 306 is my baby.
I think it's partly to do with the fact that it's so cheap I don't have to worry about where I park it, scratches, dings etc. and it still drives very nicely. I've become so accustomed to the heavy controls that anything new feels sedated and unnatural.
Just spent a couple of hundred pounds on keeping it on the road for another year and it's only worth ~ £1000!

Ah, the memories. One of the highlights was that it sometimes wouldn't start due to what must have been a bad connection. I could open the door, put my right foot out, push the car up to a spped where it would bump start. Brilliant
I never bothered to diagnose the starting issue.
The skinny tyres were brilliant also. It made the handling a hoot!

I would have never guessed that they were so cheap, or so bad - I always assumed they'd be boring, slow but pleasant enough and the allure of a 3 pointed star would mean they were always worth more than their scrap value.
I've never owned a 'cheap and cheerful' car, don't get me wrong I've owned a LOT of cheap cars, my current one is the only Car I've ever owned that's worth more than £10k as far as I can remember, but all the cheap ones have been absolutely horrible in every way, the worst being my last car, £1000 worth of Mondeo which I hated in every possible way - maybe I should hang out in the Post Office more often!
