Selling a car to a foreign buyer and paperwork

Hi - I have a buyer from Germany for my car, I just want to check that I am doing everything correctly, and that I'm not going to receive a load of speed camera bills etc over the next few weeks!

I will be accepting cash only for the car, and we'll go to the bank together to pay it in, so that should be safe.

My main question concerns the V5 and paperwork - from what I can understand on the DVLA website, he fills in the new buyer sections 6 and 10 and we both sign the declaration section 8. I then write a letter to DVLA giving reg number, make and model, date of sale and name of address of the new keeper, and give the seller the entire V5 - is this correct?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes you are correct. The buyer will need the complete document in order to register the car in his home country. Keep a photocopy of the V5 for your records and write immediately to the DVLA giving the details of the sale including buyer's address. You should receive a confirmation letter from the DVLA in 2 or 3 weeks.

I have sold two of my cars to Holland in the past year and had no problems either time with the paperwork.

I had the same thing when I sold a motorbike. Completed the sections you mentioned then wrote a letter, got him to sign it, sent it to DVLA, within 2 weeks I had a letter showing the changes.

Was very simple, almost seemed to simple, but it worked.
