That gritty stuff always reminds me of the time when I was 17 and had a puncture when delivering my girlfriend home after a night out.
Mate was driving, hit edge of kerb avoiding a driver in the middle of the road. Seemed fine, but tyre deflated about 2 miles down the road, pitch black country lane. We found a farmer's gate to pull over into and proceeded to change the tyre using all the wonderful quality tools that a brand new 1999 Fiesta came with.
Needless to say, as it was the first time either of us had done this, we did everything wrong, and it took us over two hours. Girlfriend got an irate phone call from her Dad wondering why she was out way past her midnight curfew, it was obvious he didn't believe our story.
So we eventually get the space saver on, and roll up to her house at about half two in the morning. Dad in dressing gown comes storming out of the house and sees two pristeen wheels on his side. Runs around the other side of the car, spies the spacesaver, and the damaged wheel in the boot, parcel shelf askew.
I get out to explain what happened, and he sees my hands are absolutely filthy, so takes us up to his garage for a blob of gritty orange Swarfega. I'd never seen the stuff at this point, so rubbing it in makes it look ten times worse. Then a quick rinse under the tap, and you'd never know they were dirty to begin with.
After that we had a nice chat about his MG C which was in the garage, he was impressed I knew what it was, although I wouldn't say we became the best of friends - I was banging his 17 year old daughter of course - but there was a bit more respect there.
So yes, apols for thread derailment, but that's what I think of, whenever I see orange Swarfega.

I've been happy with the swarfega orange stuff for a while now , does a good job plus smells nice - gosh that sounds girly.
Early days I used to use a mixture of Vim/Soap Powder and washing up liquid which took most oil/grease off .
Used to get the buckets with pull out wipes( from work) that looked like giant sized bum wipes, but removed just about every type of muck. Problem is that a lot of hand cleaners dry out your hands. Solution ( if you still can get it) is to use a pre work gel/solutuion. I've heard stories that oil/grease is carcinogenic, hence the tendency for latex gloves these days. Possible problems with synthetic oils, as I only used stuff like Castrol & Duckhams in all my cars till the latest one, and I can't get down to do oil these days .
