Why won't the DVLA re-issue a plate from a long-dead car?

If a car has been marked as scrapped - the numberplate appears to be scrapped with it.

The reason I ask is that it might be nice to have a plate from cars my Dad had when I was a kid. All but 2 of them are scrapped.

Never done it. But based on several threads, it seems you can ask them about specific plates and they consider re-issuing them via auction.

Because the car might not have been scrapped, and might one day be found and restored.

If it's been marked as scrapped it won't be issued with its original plate anyway, but may be able to get an age related plate (depending on number of original components used).

I don't know WHY they won't but I'm under the impression if the cars dead the plate goes with it and the only way to ressurrect it is to MOT the car and transfer it.

I have an original logbook from a car that was scrapped a long time ago, it is my initials and I have thought about trying to get permission to be able to use the number. From enquiries made a few years back it seems then the donor plate /car had to have a valid MOT. Cant do that with a car that has been scrapped many many years ago. Not sure what is required now, would love to know.

The database isn't 100% accurate. Especially prior to continuous taxation/sorn, but even since, vehicles just vanish from the records without any info on what has happened to them.

I suspect DVLA doesn't wish to make it obvious how bad the data is, so the simple solution is never to re-issue the "dead" numbers.

DVLA can be interesting on stuff like this.

I bought a motorcycle in 1980, in Germany, whilst serving in the forces.

When I returned to the UK it was given an age related plate,(at my request, I could have had a new plate at that time) , it was originally on BFG plates, the bike was later sold.

It was used until October 1986, and DVLA hadn't heard of it from that date, until I bought it back in 2007 (I knew where it was), they issued me a V5 for it without an issue.

Everything was fine until I'd finished rebuilding it last year, the fun began when I came to tax it.

What was interesting was I knew more about the bike then they did, when and where it was bought, how it came into the UK, when it was first taxed in the UK (which was six months after it first came here for good), who the second and third owners were (they knew who its third owner was, but they didn't seem to know who the first and second were), I am its first and forth owner, where it was registered to, the actual addresses etc.

Their records don't seem to be very good at all, and the fact that I had a V5 didn't help, as they'd changed those for a V5C, and they hadn't issued a V5C for it, as it had never been taxed on the V5.

The local office sorted it, gawd knows how I'd get on without a local office, which if we haven't actually lost yet, it is due for closure.

If you can prove it's the same vehicle, not "reconstructed", then it'll get the original plate.

<thinks> Sorry, might it be news to you that somebody's not quite told the truth to DVLA?

What's required is simple. You would need to ring a similar car and MOT that on the faked identity.

About 10 years ago I asked the dvla for a specific number plate. They advised me as a result of my request they will put it up for auction in about six months. Well it turned up after nine months...which I then bought.

My point was exactly that it's not what is that matters, it's what has been recorded.

If it's been scrapped, it's not the same vehicle; if it's the same vehicle, it can't have been scrapped. If someone told porkies in the past, tough st.

There's a massive, bold piece of text which states:
gov.uk said:
Vehicles with a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) must never reappear as complete vehicles or be presented for registration, though some components may be recycled. You can’t keep the original registration or vehicle identification number.
Also at the bottom of the 'Rebuilt Vehicles' page.

I would just like the number, not the car. One number I would like is from a car that I know no-longer exists. It stayed in the family from new until it's scrapping at 10 years old after it was written off. Its not in a shed somewhere.

I would like KUN 949 P or KUN 955 P or XJR 384 T

One question for you... When did certificates of destruction get introduced? And are _all_ cars which get scrapped now (or otherwise fall off DVLA's record) issued with one?

All vehicles scrapped by an official end of life treatment facility i.e. scrap merchant get a Certificate of Destruction issued to DVLA, but if yo break the vehicle up yourself and weigh the remaing pieces in for scrap before filling in the relevant section of V5 and posting to DVLA it will still be registered as scrapped but obviously no certificate.

The regulations for reclaiming or transfering numbers has changed so often its hard to keep track of them. The first I can remember about 35 years ago the vehicle currently registerd under that number had to be MOTd, then MOTd and taxed, the next ruling the vehicl must have had a current MOT within the last 18 months i.e the mot could have expired 1 day less than 18 months, one day over hard luck. Not sure on current legislation only that numbers can now only be transferred from like to like vehicles i.e cars to cars, motorcycle to motorcycle tractor to tractor.

Who cares?

The more important question is, is the 'Scrapped' box ticked on the DVLA's computer screens?

You don't find it even vaguely relevant? Fine... But if you think about it, it may just explain quite a lot...
