Bored of Focus ST want V6/V8
Discussion
Hey guys,
Basically had my Focus ST for 2 years now and it's up around 300bhp or so. But prices on them are decent in the ROI atm so thinking of getting rid of it for what i paid 2 years ago. Great car but since driveshafts started to go south and clutches can i go i have decided it's time for a change.
Budget is about 9k sterling ignoring taxes i need to change the car to Irish plates (ugh)
In the mood for a Lazy V8 mainly, Vauxhall Monaro would be the dream but i think the 6 litre versions are just outside my budget
Anyone been in my position/Any suggestions ?
Love RX7's/300zx(manuals) but clean ones go for serious money and if i was going that far back in years i would need to knock 3k off that budget for a daily driver and have one as a weekend car.
So confus

How much performance do you want? These are 10 ish second cars to 100mph and keep going to 185mph effortless fast cross country pace but 18 mpg would be doing well on a commute as I've discovered.
These things really do fly and cover ground quickly and with WOT as your progressing through the gears unnearvingly fast to the point I've backed off countless times as the car is too fast for the road.
Off piste option 5ltr v8 TDI in the Phaton that thing flies sounds ok and sips fuel.

Shortlist i had in my head was.
Stand alone car.
B7 S4 (Drinks oil and thin on the ground in the ROI)
E39 M5 (Potentially big bills and all the ones over here are rough)
645ci (Again potentially crippling bills if it has active steering)
Late XJR (Dated looking)
LS2 Monaro (Seem to be holding steady at 10k+ for 6 litre one)
Weekend toy for 6k or so
RX7 (Possible conpression issues and most have been tarted up badly)
300ZX/Fairlady (Quite old now and late ones are hard to find)
Possible LHD yank tank or some sort (unknown pitfalls)
Not really after mad performance just similar to my stage 3 ST i guess but with more comfort and a decent noise. Only aftermarket thing i would do is an exhaust system and leave it at that.

Monaro would 100% be top of the list if im honest but i couldn't settle for a older cv8 would want a 6 litre facelifted one(so i guess it's time to save the difference up), with B7 S4 a close second with the right exhaust system.
Just get some upgraded headers and a Wortec exhaust system and off i go.
Spent over 3 grand on the ST since i got it and im never going to get that money back.
Mongoose section 59 full system with race cat
Modern stage 3 remap
Polybushed front/lowered/spaced
Massive aftermarket IC
and now driveshafts
The ST has so many small annoying things that go wrong with them that add up like bonnet mechanism breaking/alternator failure and driveshafts and clutch slip i think it's time to jump ship while im ahead and get something i can just buy stick and exhaust system on and enjoy. Afterall 19mpg from a hot hatch is madness when you think about it.
Thanks alot guys was just after some left field suggestions and confirmation of what i was thinking.
Anyone know of a decent supplier for Monaros in the UK ? They seem thin on the ground on the sites i have come across, always the same 10 or so cars.

Apart from the cosmetics there isn't that much difference between the LS1 (5.7) and LS2 (6.0).
A well modded CV8 is probably a better bet than a stock VXR.
I totally under where you're coming from though, when I got my Monaro I had to have a VXR. It really depends on if the bodykit is a deal breaker or not, something to consider a CV8 is cheap as chips to repair the VXR is outrageous when it comes to the HSV bits. The front bumper from VX is £2,400 alone......

W211 E55 K
C5 RS6
E39 M5
These really are top of the tree for that era none are cheap to run all are bloody fast but the E55 K destroys the other two in a straight line by some margin as its real competitor would be the V10 RS6 and V10 M 5 but it came to the market much sooner and is now for no apparent reason a lot cheaper than the other two.
I've driven it it is LOL fast has heated air cooled massaging and adaptive front seats ride is supreme engine noise is lovely handling v the other two is a touch more willowy.
The E39 M5 straight line is the slowest out of this group
All 3 are PH cars which I'd assume most would like to run but either cannot justify the age/running costs/Bork factor of £70-85k cars in their day. Heck they are the same price as a 5-7year old Golf GTI I know what is more fun but if anything goes wrong in my DS6 its going to be £3k + most jobs are engine out even for the tamest of problems....think lambda sensor !80 oh no £4 k as they run on top of engine and gearbox.... Discs and pads £2k tyres £1k min gearbox £5k parts alone.
Eyes wide open with these cars - you'd most likely not have any issue as the web is full of those stories of problems whereas noone really posts up heck no problems.

I just think the CV8 looks abit meh to be honest and it's a once off purchase cae.A well modded CV8 is probably a better bet than a stock VXR.

Even if my circimstances changed and i needed an oil burner day to day i would garage it and buy a diesel for 3k or so and be happy knowning it's there ready to go should i want to tax it up for the summer.
Main thing that attracts me to them is the fact that unlike the cars listed above they can't go horribly wrong and smash your savings and wouldn't be light years ahead of the ST in terms of running costs (when you consider ive spent alot on modifications)
Just gotta keep an eye out for one now over the next 6 months (pref black) and get the boat over to buy one.
Wish me luck

Isn't an E39 M5 over 12secs for 100mph? I'm sure I've seen that figure quoted a few times.
If you're bored of a 300bhp Focus ST, I don't imagine a S4 or S6 will hold your interest for long.
He needs w211 or S211 E55 K AMG and chuck £2 k at it your deep into 600bhp muscle car territory.but suspension can go and doesn't that cost c£7k for direct replacement not sure if OP is prepared to swallow that potential billIf you're bored of a 300bhp Focus ST, I don't imagine a S4 or S6 will hold your interest for long.

Would consider that generation E class as too big personally and i think they have major issues with corrosion
Good call though, as it's generally only going to be myself or myself and 1 passanger im leaning towards a coupe bodyshape.
Also correct i would have max a 2k reserve for mechanical stuff without having to eat my savings up

In which case discount the E55 k and c5 RS6 when these go wrong you can quickly get to a realisation its cheaper to buy another one than fix it.

S Type R?
Basically on the sub £10k mark and to be quicker than what you have is only going to be the ones I've flagged up else its a modified car unless I've missed anything.
The Monaro is slower /same as you have so why change

V8 Sound (Race catted 5 pot sounds lovely too mind)S Type R?

RWD (high powered FWD is just lots of tyre screeching)
Comfort
Simpler engine setup (big lazy unstressed v8 instead of a turbo running at it's limits)
It's been 2 years just want a change really for something more pure
Thanks alot for your suggestions however
