Not sure how many of you know this but it's not something I was aware of. When you buy a car that is SORN you need to get it SORN yourself straight away or you will suffer the wrath of DVLA.
I bought a SORN car on 11th March and since 13th March am on an extended trip out of the UK. I've just checked DVLA site for car status and, where it was previously showing as SORN it now shows "Unlicensed with keeper change" and date of liability as 11-3-14.
No problem I thought, I'll just SORN on-line. Nice and easy. Actually no, because I don't have the V5 back yet and need the doc ref number to SORN it.
I'm guessing it's a call to DVLA tomorrow to see if this can be sorted. Seems a bit daft that if you buy a car taxed, the tax automatically transfers with the car and yet SORN doesn't. Why?
By the way, for the pedants. The car was trailered from the seller to my home and now sits on a private drive and is insured.

The reference number you need is on the new keeper slip you should have.
I have the new keeper slip but surely the ref number pertains to the originally SORN V5. Because of transfer to my name I'm guessing I have to SORN under the new V5 reference, which I don't have yet.The reference number you need is on the new keeper slip you should have.

Currently it can stay with the car.
