I'm not talking about traders here but Joe blow doing his thing.

As above I note some people buy cars at the drop of a hat, to use or tart up, either keep for a while and sell on maybe at a loss or wreck it.

So how do you deal with insuring all these vehicles and then moving on to the next shed or palace, seems you'd be paying through the roof on insurance and then losing a load more just on admin fees and general faffing around it can't just be the two car policies either can it?

Was reading this excellent thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... about buying a landy on the off chance then buying a beavertail flatbed to take it home. I could have asked on there but wanted a general Q/A on here.

I don't change cars that much, but Admiral are generally good at switchovers. When I sold the Passat, I rang them and they suggested a suspension (not cancellation) of policy, and that when I bought a new car I could "re activate" the policy. Same policy, same policy number, renewal date not affected. It cost about £17, £13 was because the car I bought had a larger engine, and it was done with a phone call!

Some companies are easy going letting you add temp cars to the policy for reasonably cheap did this a fair amount when I was younger for myself and bringing other mates new cars home for them whilst they sold the old car. Other companies don't seem as happy with this nowdays however.

I've often wondered this as well, so looking forward to hearing the replies.

That's interesting, anytime I've rang my insurance company they've wanted to charge me for the pleasure of well just ringing them.

Must be more on here who've had shed loads of cars and swapped insurance, otherwise it seems inappropriately expensive in insuring one car after the other then canceling and getting charged admin fees and poor returns would make it a very expensive hobby.

A lot of companies give you ability to change your cars/add cars/take away cars online nowadays. Since you're doing it yourself then there's no admin fee.

ive done the flipping thing a few times on sub £1000 cars. it costs me £35 to add another car to my current single car policy fully comp for 7 days. i usually find thats enough to get the car home and maybe do some local driving testing driving after fixing things taking to MOT etc...seems good value if you can get that back from the resale price....and if you cant then you shouldnt be flipping cars in the first place smile

One of my mates has had over 100 cars (he is not a trader) his most recent insurance company told him they would cancel his policy if he changed car again in the current policy.

I am not sure why really as they charged him each time, I suspect they thought he was a trader?

I'm with Admiral and I insured a car for a week on my policy that I wanted to test drive (Needed proof of ins) for £20.
Once I had bought the car I simply asked them to remove my old car and update the details with my new one.

Cost me £50 extra (1.7d to 2.8) and that was it. Same policy number, same NCD, same renewal date

I'm with Aviva and can change my policy online free of charge. It's handy for quickly running through quotes (I'm still fairly young so have to be careful on that front), and when I did buy a new car it took less than a minute to amend the car online.

I've never insured two cars at once but, if I wanted to, I'm fairly sure I can just add a car to my policy online.

i'm with Axa

they allow to do stuff like this online, but value for money it isn't

temp cover isn't bad, but max of 30days i think
bmw 535d main car, temp cover on a ford ka i think £50 for 30 days maybe

but if i was to move main cover to ka, i only get back £100 after having paid £4-500 for the year

Admiral has been good to me.

"Yeah, can I change my Ford fiesta for a tvr?"

They'll insure anything if you throw enough money at them. Can't say the same about aviva.

I suggest nobody to keep doing it.

Insurance company will eventually investigate you and possibly cancel your insurance which will cost you in the future

Obviously if you cant help it then its fine but they will pick on anything.

You just ring up your insurers and ask for a change of vehicle. Its not an issue.

He's referring to people who buy a couple of vehicles on a whim so they might have 2 or 3 at a time.
I think he thought that you would need to buy a policy for each of them

I've recently taken out a second policy on a second car that I intend to sell and cancel after a few months. Even with no NCB to use against that car the annual price was only £200, I'll incur a £45 fee when I cancel but with a pro-rata refund the total cost shouldn't be too bad.

I'm swapping my main car at the end of the month, that should hopefully just be a case of getting the insurers to amend the policy and paying a small increase.

The only time I've run into difficulty was when I was 20 and Norwich Union flat out refused to insure me on a new car that other insurers were quite happy to cover for ~£350 annually. I had to cancel a policy 9 months in, which was a bit galling at a time when I was still building up NCB.

I don`t see anything referring to multiple vehicles in the first post.

Just refers to changing cars on a whim which is no issue.
