Phoning insurance companies?
Discussion
Hey guys!
Just been on the phone to a broker, who couldn't offer me a quote as I've had little experience driving a more powerful car.
Just for the record I'm almost 24 (under a month left just in case your wondering)and I've had my license since some time i was 17. Now admittedly I hadn't driven until I was late 18 / early 19 as insurance was way too expensive, and even then it was occasional use of my dads car.
I've spent the past year in a little Corsa 1.2 (terrible I know) to earn a year of NCB and I'm getting a reasonable quote of just under £1600 ( A lot, but its the cost you pay living in London and being young) on a MK5 GTI.
When I told the broker I was able to get quotes with my "limited" driving experience on comparison sites, I was advised to ring them up as "when they find out I had earnt my NCB in a corsa, they may refuse to quote me".
Is this really the case? and if so how is somebody young who has a passion for cars, and wants to do things properly supposed to do this?
Cheers,
Faz

Sounds like bulls
t, spouted by the broker to encourage you to use them instead. You're 23 with one years driving experience under your belt, how do you expect insurance companies to measure that risk?
The way to do it is do whatever it takes to get a car and insurance at 17. Then at 23 you will have 6 years driving experience and may even also have a couple of years NCB, you won't have 6 because you will have crashed!

The 'specialist' brokers in my experience are nothing more than using it as a marketing ploy to get you to spend more money on the exact same product the big boys will offer you.
If the comparison sites are giving you quotes then that's what you will get. Just take the deal off the comparison site your happy with.
ETA - Did he by any chance give you the number to call of a 'specialist broker' who would give you a quote?

Sounds like a lie. I have never ever heard of any insurance company asking what car you earned your no claims bonus in.
They definitely do. When I bought my Tuscan S they asked if I had had a car over 300bhp before. Also there is routinely a question in motorcycle insurance for bikes over 600cc if you have owned and ridden and been insured on a bike over 600cc before.Though it is usually to get a better than 'high street' price. For the Tuscan I was getting quotes of £4k etc (London postcode) and after going through a broker it was £1500 or so. A clean year later it almost halved so it is a totally reasonable question.
Thanks for the replies guys. Ean... you clearly don't live in London and/or are far from young. Up till 22/23. I only needed very little use of a car so purchasing and insuring a car was just a silly waste of money in my circumstances. The money I "saved" allowed me to put a deposit down and take a mortgage out. Much more valuable then earning some NCB imo. Anyway my question wasn't regarding the price of my quotes or why I am still being quoted so much. It was more about what insurers would think of my previous car.

Have you not tried the comparison websites first to get an idea, then follow up calls to best price companies?
Hi Lee, I did mention I have a quote of just under 1600 in my original post. I perhaps didn't make it clear that this was through a comparison site. So I have got a quote from the comparison sites before ringing around.
The reason for this post was to query whether what the broker had told me re: my 1 years NCB has been built up on a Corsa making it almost worthless when upgrading to a MK5 GTI. I just wanted to know whether this was in fact true and an insurer could refuse to quote me after finding out the "jump" in power I was making.
It's only because I had never rung an insurance company before, and had always just bought online. I was surprised to be told that they would withdraw a quote on the basis of my previous car.
Thanks,
Faz

Sounds like utter b
ks to me. Being asked if you've owned/had regular use of a powerful car is one thing, saying that the NCD you have earnt is worthless because the car you used to insure wasn't powerful enough is bulls
t. I have never been asked what cars my NCD was earnt on.The Co-Op used to accept 1 years NCD earnt from a 50cc moped as part NCD on a car when I was 17.
