Morning all
Looks like the family and I are going to have to move back to the UK after 7 years living in Brisbane. I've kinda lost touch with the UK used car market whilst I've been away and to that end need a little advice.
I need to buy 2 cars when we get back in country later this year but don't have the massivist budget available. In Aus we have a 2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium (Leather, SatNav, etc.. ) as the family wagon and a 2008 Merc C220Cdi as our town, commute transport. We own all of the Merc and some of the Scooby.
When we get back, I'm going to need similar but have a budget of approx 15k for both. I have no allegiances to specific brands but do lean towards German rather than Korean if you get my drift. I typically keep cars for 4 - 6 years and use indies for servicing.
The sort of things I have in mind would be...
Family
V70
Merc W211 Wagon
Subaru Liberty/Legacy
Commute
Golf MkVI
Merc W204
BMW E90
But what other options are realistically available? Is my budget enough?

A friend of mine has just returned from New Zealand and had his E Class shipped over, I can't remember the exact cost but it appeared cheap considering the distance involved.

The Merc is realistically worth $28000 as a private sale (15k GBP). That's where the budget comes from. Used cars are ever so expensive here. Had considered shipping it but will cost circa 2.5K GBP to do that.

I had no idea they were that expensive used over there. In that case I'd look for a V70 and something like a Seat Leon/Octavia for your commute.Your budget may need to creep, depending on your requirements for age and condition.

I'm more of a condition than age kind of buyer. Mileage doesn't bother me too much just so long as the cars in good nick and reliable. Your budget may need to creep, depending on your requirements for age and condition.
Used to have a Golf V GTi when last in the UK, a leased car as part of my package at IBM, which is why a Golf VI might be an easy option - but aren't they a bit beige?
Not opposed to a SEAT, used to have a '99 Toldeo V5 - but from what I remember before I left, they've kinda lost their way a bit.
Skoda's are possible - what about a Superb? Are they likely to be in budget?

Seen a few Mundane-O's and not sure if I like them. They've replaced the Falcon Wagon with them here and have got very mixed reviews. However, as I plan to keep the car for 4-6 years, not overly concerned with depreciation, just want something comfy, reliable and family/dog proof to use for weekends to relatives, Cornwall etc.. They lose money quickly so will be cheaper than Volvo,etc and are a great car if you're not a badge snob

Commute is a TBC - could be short, could be huge. I work in Software sales and will need to be M4 corridor accessible. We'll probably move to somewhere near Winchester but that's a TBC also.
