Which car would if left running emit cleaner exhaust gas than its drawing in based on the Birmingham down to the coast?


Also which car emmits the same output as the current pollution level? Is it a big thirsty old v8 or actually not that bad

Hmmm a car combusts (naphthalene), so it'll always insert C10H8 and O2 (oxigen), converting it into energy, water and and C02 (carbon dioxide). So in that aspect it's impossible to expect it to be "better" for the environment (that needs O2 and not CO2).

But, if you're talking about fine dust in the air (which I suppose you are), some air filters will filter a lot and the car will work like the most inefficient vacuum cleaner ever conceived.

Imho it's a moot point made by sensationalists for good viewing and quotable lines. The fact that you happen to "catch" fine dust with your air filter has as much effect on the pollution as the roaches and rats you run over has an effect on their respective population.

I remember ages ago some comment made that x vehicle in Mumbai is emitting less from its tailpipe than is in the localised atmosphere.

It was a Clarksonisum and about the 911 Turbo (996 I think) he claimed it was so efficient / clean that it's emissions were cleaner than air quality in Mumbai or somewhere - the assumption being that if you got a fleet of 911 Turbos blatting around you make the place alpine fresh given long enough.

It was, as is a lot of the stuff is spouts, total bks.
