£10,000 to spend on Westfiel and confused as I can be - help

Hi All,

I am brand new to the forum (and forums in general) and hope I have introduced myself in the right manner.

I have decided to take the plunge and buy a little open wheeled sports car with the £10,000 I have to play with.

I am focused on a Westfield. I could have put in some more brass and gone for a Caterham....but to be honest I am not that bothered about the history of the brand and more bothered about the fun I will have with the car.

My use will be 90% Sunday drives, maybe using the car to go to the office in the summer (country roads) with one or two track days per year.

What is throwing me are all the variants of a Westfield. Engine, bike or car, engine size, steering rack type, suspension, body type, etc etc etc.

For £10,000 or less on a Westfield, what do I want to focus my attention on (Special Editions, Sports, Ztec engine, Honda engine....)

I just don't know where to start

I want one of these type of fun weekend/summer nights cars. Seen a few on track at Castle Combe and seem like a right hoot.

I have owned two Westfields, including building this one myself in 1991.



I would personally avoid the bike engined examples, they can be very highly strung, the 2.0 Ford or Vauxhall engined ones are a nice compromise, I reckon you should get a nice example for around 7/8k.

There are plenty to choose from, so take your time....

Insurance should not be too expensive, but maybe consider a Tiger or Dax too.....

Megablade.

Cheap to insure, cheap to run, 6 speed sequential, 11,000 rpm, very fast, very light.

Tax cheap as 0.9 litre, insurance cheap and, if the engine goes bang its £800 to fit a new one. Honda engines are reliable though.

Yes indeedy I did look at the Caterham's around 12 months ago.

I got the 'bug' after a track day at Palmer MS.

Of all the cars we drove, the Caterham was the one for me (bar the Formulae Ford...)

The prices on used Caterham's seems to have shot up over the past 12 months...which confirms your point about the residuals.

Caterham owners will always tell me to go for the Caterham due to the brand / history whereas Westfield owners always tell me to ignore the history / brand and just get a fun car within budget!!

My search continues.

If you're wanting a "sevenalike", then there's umpty different manufacturers out there. Caterham and Westfield are just the best known two.

Other than the Atom or Morgan (way too expensive), I had thought that my only 'open wheeled' options were the Westfield and Caterham.

I'd be interested to know what other options are available?

Dax rush , Stuart Taylor, MK, Tiger, Marlin, Luego, Robin Hood, Quantum ,MNR, NG, Sylva, and probably loads more. Personally I'd stick with Westfield or Dax for ease of parts and good support.Although a well made Tiger or MK is worth a look. A badly built Caterham won't be as good as a well built Westy Etc
