Chris Harris video: McLaren 650S

Fired up by the review? No doubt you'll want to see what the 650S can do in Harris's hands...

I apologise if this isn't the most comprehensive 650S briefing you'll be seeing this week - I was a little under the weather when we shot it. I think the main point I neglected to mention was the appearance of optional carbon bucket seats. They are around £5,000, which back on planet earth will buy you a very decent car, but in the world of £200K supercars, they're very pleasant indeed.

You've probably already read Dan's report on the car; this video was shot a few days later, when the British weather had arrived. I did however manage a few dry laps before the heavens opened, and the McLaren drivers were really keen to hear what the differences between 12C and 650S were. My answer was probably a little disappointing.

You see unless you are member of the team that develops these cars, or you happen to have a 12C along for the ride, or a group of competitor cars, it's actually very difficult to spot differences. Yes, the 650S felt more positive when it turned-in, and there was more front axle grip than I remember in the 12C - but the change is not that marked.

The biggest shift I felt was in the chassis settings: moving from Normal to Sport in the old car didn't seem to offer that much of a change, now it really does.

Dan occasionally likes to quietly disagree with me on certain matters, so I'll suggest that I didn't feel the extra performance quite as clearly as he did. That's not to say it doesn't feel immensely fast, just that the 650S still needs to be spinning beyond 3,000rpm to feel brisk and the last 12C I drove still felt way, way punchier than the last 458 I sat in. This car really is so fast you have to watch yourself on the public highway.

And that's the bit I can't tell you about, the road. It was lashing with rain when I had the car, and being a bit broken myself we ran out of time to go and drive it on the street.

Still, good excuse to borrow one in the UK for a few days.

Enjoy the vid!

Awesome video, thanks Chris! I particularly loved the open chassis shots at the beginning, wonderfully geeky hehe

how can any one feel sorry for a 12C owner ? they have had 3 years out of the car and now there is a new one !
they can like most of us do part ex to a face lift car if they like it better.

I think the new nose already has aged badly. They should have fitted a less extreme version of the P1 rear to the current 12C with a tiny nip and tuck for the front. getmecoat

I do admire McLaren's engineering but not the looks of the 650S. The P1 looks great and the front suits it quite nicely but somehow I don't think it fits the 650S. No doubt is an awesome car though.

Technological masterpiece it may be, but it's no looker
I guess it boils down to buying a car for bragging rights and pure driver experience, or buying a car because every time you look at it, you feel the stretch of denim smile

Enjoyed that video Chris, a bit less drifty and a bit more on how the car is to drive as well as some of the tech stuff.......good job - hope you're feeling a bit better now!

The car itself is lovely. I prefer the 12C front end but the new front end is clearly there to not only change the looks but a huge increase in downforce.

Since they will allow you to have steel brakes on this car instead of carbon, I wonder if they would put a 12C face on a 650S if somebody requested it.

I'd be asking for it, that's for sure.

Same for me, just don't like the new front end, I'd also be asking for different wheels too.

Not as nice to look at as a 458, but I'd still have an original 12C over them both.

Not a fan of the new nose - but I bet it would look better in black or dark blue

12c - class leading performance figures and class leading depreciation! Even more so now with 650S. Hardly a facelift. The 12c has been put in the FBI witness protection programme and emerged with a new identity and extensive plastic surgery.

Chris sums up exactly what I got shot down for in the original thread "facelift" that's what this car is ,but you pay a lot of extra money for it. That's not to say it isn't a brilliant car, I know critising mclarean is akin to blasphenmy on here....

As has been said, impressive tech but not sure about the look. I think the biggest problem I have with it is not that it doesn't really work, it's that it doesn't really work while also not being original - They weren't stylistically trying anything new with that front, it's just cribbed off the P1, making that exquisite mad hypercar seem a little less special and the "new" car's gawkiness a little harder to forgive.

I don't think it looks bad at all, it's not boner inspiring but it's hardly a minger in my eyes, I like it and would kill a man for one. I'd have it over the 458 too.

Its a much better effort than 12C but at £270k for a 650 spyder with bit of spec v.hard to justify when you can buy super car royalty for this sort of money like F12 or Aventador. I'd have a F12 in heart beat instead of the 650 S at that price point. In fact I'd probably stick that sort of money into a Carrera GT if my lotto numbers come in.

F12 is a dream list car for sure, but wouldn't it be nearer £370k with a few options?
