alternatives to Octavia VRS DSG Estate?

After lots of deliberation, I've decided that the daily driver for me should be something like an Octavia VRS DSG estate.
I've got about £15k top whack. Is there anything else I've missed that combines practicality, pace, value, fuel economy and the ability to do the odd light track day? It needs to be an auto as well, hence the DSG.
perhaps a BMW330 estate or similar?

Things like the 3-series and A4 estate feel significantly bigger but have appreciably less interior (especially boot) space. The 3-series does drive much better, though.
When we were looking for a car for the wife, she preferred the Octavia, I preferred the BMW (comparing hatch to saloon, as it happens). I wouldn't say either was "better" though, just different. A 15k Octavia will still have a lot of value to lose very quickly. I wouldn't pay more than about 7k for one, personally.
Don't expect to average anywhere near the official combined figure in the Octavia. We average ~30mpg from ours and it will do about 38mpg on a long slowish motorway run.

I hear what you're saying about depreciation... problem is, the DSG estate VRS seems to be a fairly rare car... I dont want anything too old or leggy and that has lead me to the figure of around £13k-£15k. Happy to be proved wrong though, if you can find them! As someone has pointed out above, the estate is uncommon mostly because it offers very little over the hatch. The boot floor area is pretty much identical - all you get in the estate is more space above the window-line. Hub said:
Assuming you mean petrol VRS, the estate is quite rare at that price range (very late mk2), but unless you have a dog or specifically want an estate don't discount the hatch as it has just about the same size boot.
I have 3 kids, so need a pretty big car. If I'm honest, I'd just assumed the estate was much bigger... I'd better go and check the stats! We currently have a Touran which is pretty cavernous. But it's just not fun.We've got an Octavia saloon, we would have had either saloon or estate, they are exactly the same dimensions, apart from the roof line. The boots cavernous - I find it quite hard to reach all the way in! My wife uses it to commute to the centre of Brum and usually gets mid forties MPG. Steady 80/85 on the motorway will get mid fifties. This is on a 2 litre, DSG, but not VRS.
