Was a roadgoing Lotus like a roadgoing McLaren in the 70's?

Just watched Chris' vid of the new 650S and like many was amazed by the P1 and F1 before it. Seeing an F1/racing company team make a roadgoing car is just a very cool thing.
I was just wondering if it was the same back in the glory days of Team Lotus? When Chapman died, I hadn't learned to walk yet, so I think of Lotus as the company who made the Esprit (Peter Stevens) and Elise before I connect it to the heritage of Jim Clark and the amazing front-runners Lotus were in the 60's & 70's.
Was buying/seeing an Elan in the 60's an amazing thing? Was the Esprit like a 458/650S/P1 of its day? A car made by the dominant sports car manufacturer that you could drive on the road? Or was it just a nice car like a GT-86 or Porsche Cayman (or indeed an Elise!) is today?
