New member after advice

Hi All,
Have been looking through your forums and I need a little advice which forum to use.

Always had an interest in auto mechanical/electrical stuff and often fed up of difficulty in maintaining modern vehicles.

So, I would like to buy a (under £1000) car with a small engine that is old enough for me to maintain and legitimately 'play' creating my own fuel/engine management.

I have been looking at 1ltr Polo and Nova from ~1990.

Which forum would you recommend for the following questions?

I understand pre 1992 do not have 'euro' emission standards, no requirement for a CAT and no MoT emissions tests. Are there any obvious issues I should be aware of with the laws or either of these cars?

Do these engines (VW or Vx 1ltr ~1990) have serious issues? Are these new enough to not have problems with modern fuels and valve seats?

Insurance is separate issue, that would need to be discussed with a broker. I'm really trying to understand dates when different laws relating to emissions and engine management were applied.
