So, Mrs Jimbobs fancies a new Polo. With the spec that she wants, it comes out at about £13.2k. We're paying cash with no part ex.

What's the PH view of the amount we should actually be looking to pay?

VW are doing a deal where they pay the first £1k of your deposit if you go down the PCP route so I was planning on asking them to match that for a cash sale.

Realistically, can we expect to get the car for around £12k, or is that a bit optimistic?

Many thanks for any advice.

Have you tried any car Brokers? You may get a better deal.

I don't think it unreasonable of you to ask that, but I've never been a cash buyer at a dealer for a car so I'm not exactly in the best position to advise you.

Drive the deal have Polos available, mayhaps it would be worth a look with them since you are a cash buyer with no part ex?

Always helps to go at the end of a month when they need to hit a target!

Doesn't What Car or similar post suggested discount you should aim for? When you can drive by a Vauxhall dealer and they give a few grand off without even asking, i'd be asking for a couple.

Rarely a benefit in paying cash these days.

yes I gather they like to make money on the finance so cash is typically the least favoured option.

Unfortunately the like of WBAC give people the impression that no P/X and Cash is the best way to get a stonking deal on a car, it isn't.

At the dealerships I have worked at, a P/X is the same as cash as it gets sent to auction or retailed so we weren't fussed whether a customer had a p/x or not.The dealer make their money from finance and insurance products so I would say that in paying cash you will not be in the strongest position.

By all means try and get a deal but I shouldn't think they will be able to match the £1k deposit contribution as that most likely comes from either the manufacturer or their finance house.

Sounds optimistic. The What Car target price is the same as list price which suggests no discounts are available.

However, VW did launch the facelift Polo at the Geneva Motor Show last month so it might be possible to get something off a pre-facelift model. A 10% discount seems unlikely though.

drive the deal or www.carwow.co.uk

Just purchased a Golf Gti from the latter and managed just over 11% off.

Cash used to be popular when the person you were dealing with could do a hooky deal losing the VAT, very unlikely in a main dealer, or any dealer for that matter now.

Unless you've got something ghastly (big engined petrol manual with cloth and no nav) PX is usually a good thing, it gives the dealer another bite of the cherry, another car to try and sell again at a profit.

Highly unlikely, the deposit contribution will be from the manufacturers finance company, sometimes with a contribution from the dealer, the best you could hope for is the dealer's contribution.

Bit optimistic IMO, I reckon you might get it for £12500-13000 but I'd be very surprised if you got it for £12k.

Dont think the dealer can take £13.2k off you in cash due to Money Laundering regulations.

I cant recall the maximum they are allowed to relieve you of - I think it might be around the £10,000 mark but even that sounds high tbh. It could be as low as £5k - do your homework/ask the stealer.

Might have to be part cash part credit car or bank transfer etc.

Sign up to the VW solutions deal then pay it off the day after you get the car. You get to keep the £1k incentive (discount) plus any other offers - cheapo servicing or whatever - and you get the car for the £12k(ish) figure that you had in mind.

Its a known loophole (not even that really) and some dealers even promote it.

€15000 unless they're registered to handle large cash amounts (very few are).

So how do individuals who may buy a car for its towing capability get round this? You know, they go on very long caravan holidays.

Close to nothing, as there are virtually none of the current. Polos left. New one opens for ordering later this month with first deliveries in July.

Thanks for the advice all.

Firstly, just to be clear I'm certainly not planning on lugging a suitcase full of fivers to the dealership. I just meant we have the money available to pay up front.

Secondly, on whim, we drove over to the local Seat dealership earlier today and found we could get a better spec new Ibiza for over £3k cheaper the the Polo. The interior doesn't have quite the same feel as the Polo, but there's a lot more included and it's a good looking little car.

The advice re negotiating as a cash buyer was spot on though - we got a small amount off the price, plus a set of mats and a tank of petrol but not much more the that. Still, Mrs JB is very happy so no complaints!

Shame I didn't see this earlier, Lookers VW are doing clearance on the Polo as the new one comes out in two weeks or so. £2000+ off list price.
