Fellow ph.ers....

I am looking for recommendations for another addition to the family. At present we run a couple of family cars and have a weekend boxster S (986) which I love. I have an itch, and about £5k to scratch it with (max), to add another weekend/off for a blast machine but something which is quite different to the boxster as I intend to keep this.

Ideas so far are - Clio 197 / 182?? Anyone had both and can give any direction as to which is best?

- civic type R

- megane Renault sport - although I had an r26 a while ago.

- Impreza? - again, had one of these but did really enjoy it.

Any more ideas/advice would be much appreciated. I think the hot hatch route would give a different driving experience to the boxster and would also be more usable across the year (500 miles in the boxster since nov!!!), but I would love to hear people's thoughts/experiences

Thanks again and I look forward to the advice.....

Out of the box, but you've got your sports car, so something like an r26r or a type r will be very similar on a b road blast, all be it a bit less sophisticated!! Soooo get a defender, jack it up, put a big loud v8 in it and have a lot of fun

V8 jag?

Can you get and xkr for this money?

Something for off-roading fun and games?

80s/90sAmerican muscle may be in budget?

Or something utterly focussed out like a Westfield?

I have driven the 197 and clio 200 and both are epic cars considering they are simple small hot hatches. I have not driven the 182 but i have watched many run rings around other more powerful stuff on the track. My brother currently owns a 200 and test drove a 182 and he says they are worlds apart but the 182 was a bit of a disapointment. Personally, if you could stretch to it the 200 cup is the way to go, serious kit.

As for other options, the Impreza is a very different beast to the boxster so could be a good contrast and is a great all rounder. Even though i own and love the impreza i would still possibly go with the clio 200 cup if the budget was there for it just because of the way it handles.

First and foremost, thanks for the replies, it's all certainly food for thought with some really interesting propositions.

Going back to the clio's, there is something about the 197/200 that strikes a cord with me. I really did love my R26 and tracked it a couple of times which was excellent fun and certainly managed to hide some of my track driving deficiencies.

This is another point which I am considering, I recently got rid of my track spotter 306 GTI -6 (very tired and not well looked after unfortunately!!!) and maybe need to consider that something in the hot hatch stable would allow odd track sessions as I do miss them and don't really want to track the boxster too much as, in my opinion, it is in lovely condition and my track driving history does not bode well for it to stay this way....

Another question if anyone can answer by experience, is the 200 that much better than a 197 to warrant the price differential? I've seen 197's for £4k ish and believe 200's to be upwards of £6.5k? Again, I'm not adverse to it but as it's gonna be used very infrequently is it going to be money well spent?

Saying that tho, the idea of an XKR is interesting???

Please keep the advice/options coming in....

Thanks...

Alfa Romeo GTV? V6-engined, naturally.

Can a classic TVR wedge be had? V8 engine too.

Clio Trophy if you have the Renault itch. Happy on a track, too.

You want something different to the Boxter. Why have two RWD convertibles? I say keep the Boxster for sunny days and go for some VTEC noise and wheelspin in the wet with a Civic Type R.

That's the key thing really, there needs to be a separate, distinct reason for going out and driving one over the other, so it does need to be different to the boxster in more than just roof. Which is another driver for me thinking front wheel drive, or turbocharged etc etc, ultimately I think it still needs to be quick enough for a blast out as where I live is mostly unrestricted (if 60 can still be classed as that..) country roads. My fear is that I buy something and never find a reason to drive it over the boxster. Having had it for a year now, the main reason I take the family car out over that (passengers aside) is the weather, so something usable in inclement weather would also be a bonus.

Maybe a V8 Landy is an appropriate alternative?????

Thanks again, the replies have really got me thinking!!!

I would recommend getting behind the wheel of the 200 cup. When i first got in it i wasnt really expecting much but within a quarter of a mile it felt more than just a car and easily as quick as my far more powerful impreza through the corners which is fine praise in my mind. As for the difference between the 197 and 200, i have driven both but had the chance to push the 200 hard but not the 197 so its difficult for me to say if its worth the extra. My brother however spent many weeks researching and comparing and concluded the 200 to be worth the extra money so thats what he went with but it has to have the cup upgrades.

I paid a reasonable chunk under 5k for the wedge in my profile.
It sounds like a nascar, is surprisngly good fun on track and has been almost 100% reliable (apart from some electrical glitches)
It also gets an amazing amount of positive attention, it is a proper event driving it.

My FN2 is a cracking car and it's surprisingly practical but the VTec power delivery is unlike anything else and I suggest you give it a go. Mine has been 100% reliable and fwd makes it predictable if we do have bad weather. The rear suspension can make the ride a bit crashy but the engine and gearbox are sublime. Mine is being reluctantly sold soon.
