Any oil rig experts out there?
Discussion
Mobile units used primarily for drilling wells are mostly called "rigs".
Fixed facilities - ie being supported by a steel / concrete jacket resting on the seabed, primarily used for producing oil & gas are mostly called "platforms".
Then of course there are jack-ups, FPSOs, TLPs, Spars, FPUs, FSOs etc.

Water is used wherever possible as there's only a big splash if the load fails
er, water can hurt you too:
car wash goes wrong

Obviously there are barriers in place whenever lifting or load testing to avoid injuries. Using water is more to minimise material damage. It's also convenient for adding load gradually by just hosing it in.rek said:
Another related question... are they called "rigs" or "platforms"? as a nipper in the 80's I had a temp job in an engineering firm that designed them in Tottenham ct rd... I remember getting an ear bending when I used the term rig...
