Amphicar Purchase (Half Road / Half Water)

This has prolly been done before, but has anyone owned or driven an amphicar (half road, half water) or anything similar in the UK?

Worth it? Expensive novelty? Sad or sick? Experiences? Sailing licenses? Links?

For clarity, I have zero connection to any amphicar makers or resellers. Just thinking about buying a weekend Summer amphicar and curious to hear from the PH posse.

A friend of my Dad had one in the 1980s that he was going to restore. Rust and unobtainable transmission spares were too difficult, so it got sold again.

They did look cute, though.

Are we talking classic amphicar, or modern equivalent?

I saw a Gibbs Aquada at the NEC motorshow years ago, looked like a LOT of fun! Dont know how many they made, don't think ive ever seen one for sale either. One hell of a fun toy if you can get your hands on one though.

The guys at Gas Monkey Garage have just sold one recently.

They seem to be a pretty sought after thing in the states.

Check out the current Fast 'N' Loud series, they have lots of fun in one.

My neighbour has 2 of them, always love taking a look round them when I'm in his garage, he says parts can occasionally be tricky, but most things can be re manufactured. They don't see the light of day much but he tells the story of driving down the jetty at the local marina one very busy summers day.....would absolutely have loved to have been there to see people's reactions!

First saw one on the Thames back in the day. Had a trip around the lake at Marcon here in one a few years back. Great fun. But about 70 mph max on the road and 'orrible handling! This photo was taken at Lac Leman at the Morges show.

That very Amphicar did undergo restoration locally in Camberley . I have seen it and it does look pretty striking... never did i know that it was £42k! :|

I do have some pictures of it on my iPhone which i can dig out.
