im in the market for a new car with a absolute maximum budget of £10k...although i would rather spend 8-ish.
i simply cant decide whether i want a porsche boxster S or a e92 3 series coupe.
ill be honest, my heart is set on a boxster s, but for the same money i can get a much newer BMW and still have a "posh badge" (yes im a tart, i know)
im a single guy, i have a van for work so my current car (dc5) does around 2k miles a year. this is the main reason for limiting my budget, i dont want thousands of pounds sitting outside my house not being used and depreciating in value.
what would you learned geezers buy in my situation?

Series 1 Lotus Elise, they are not depreciating at all, might even be increse in value over the next couple of years.

I think from what you have said, a Caterham is a ridiculous idea and possibly so too is an Elise. You implied want something German and relatively comfortable with a decent badge-what about an A5?
Of the two you listed, I would go Boxster though would try for a 987 car for a bit more money. Great all rounders.

thanks for the replies. weekend toys like a elise and caterham etc is not really for me.

i LOVE the audi a5 as suggested, but a good mate of mine beat me to it and just bought one, so thats off the list.

What possible difference would that make? It's no great loss, the 3 Series Coupe is a better car anyway, but it seems a strange reason to discount a car you love.Your shortlist of Audi A5, 3 Series and Boxster suggests you want a 'flash car' rather than a really great sports car. There is nothing wrong with this but it would lend itself to suggesting that the BMW is probably a better bet than an older Boxster. If you wanted what the Boxster offers then you wouldnt even be considering a 3 Series let alone an Audi A5 which really isn't a drivers car at all.

About £9k...I know the OP said he'd rather spend 8 but he did say he had up to 10. 
But the E46 330i / Ci is a good shout - I have a lowly 320i at the moment and want to trade up. There's simply no other car that's as well-rounded for the price.

Your £10k will get you an old 3.2S or a 2006/2007 335i twin turbo, I know which one I'd go for.
I had a 3.2 S tiptronic but didnt like it, a manual might have made it more engaging to drive, nice steering is the only positive thing I remember about my Boxster, I didnt keep it for long, horrible inside as in feels dated, odd trim colours, small/felt cramped, mine had condensation problems in winter and used to steam up, did not feel like it was as well made as older porsches I'd had before, my main problem with it just was not that quick.
I'd take A £10k 335i over a Boxster, nice car to drive, lovely inside, plenty quick enough with 300 bhp.
You might even find a convertible 335i in your price range we sold a 2007 335i for £11k in December - will give you a nice recent plate car, and a metal folding roof does not feel like a convertible when the roof its up (I'd actually take a coupe not a convertible cheaper to buy).

Since it's going to do so few miles I'd be going for something with a really big engine so slightly off centre here but how about:
