As per the title, this is an example of a problem with the seats in my dad's car. The rear head restraints started flaking like this years ago but now the front seats are going as well (not just the head restraints, the backrests are going too)

This isn't real leather, it's the fake pleather stuff that they fitted during the peak of their low quality (car is a 2005 CLK).

Anyone seen anything like it before? Is there a cost-effective way of fixing?

Assuming the answer is no then my plan is very much to just scrub off the pealing layer of lacquer and leave a smooth base layer...

I have the same car with same colour seats, mines not flaking but needs some attention. Not on the headrests but seat bolster/steering wheel.

You can buy the paint kit to repair it which contains the laquer, paint , cleaners, spray gun and gas. I think its about £35 from furnitureclinic.co.uk.

I called them last week and they will have to match the paint so you will have to send them a headrest or easier I found was the front from the drinks holder that clips off.

There are also some good how to clips on the website or you could just phone up a local leather repair guy and let him do it.
