Having two of the same car on your driveway

I knew an academic who had two smart cars (one for him, one for his wife). He was an academic, and "a bit out there" so it wasn't too much of a surprise.
When walking home from a friend's house last night, I noticed two houses within about fifty yards of eachother which both had two VW Golfs: one was a mk5 and a mk6 and the other was a mk6 and mk7.
My thought was "why?" I have nothing against Golfs, but I can't fathom a reason why you'd want two of them, other than a total lack of imagination...

We have a pair of 135i on the drive. One Vermillion red and one Le-Mans blue.
GF had a 123d coupe when we met, but never loved the rattle from the little tractor engine!
One drive of mine, was enough to convince her to swap. Still enjoying the overall package, she went for a newer N55 version of the 135i.
Both cars are staying.

Post above reminds me of something which happened at a mates house some years back.
Few of us went around to his house one Sunday morning to help move a large bathtub, as his front was full I parked in front of his neighbours house (not over the drive or anything.
Now his neighbour was a bit Victor Meldrew so within 3 minutes he was out, asking me to move as he 'needed' that space. Not wanting to rock the boat for my mate I obliged.
Nugget neighbour then pulls his shiny newish Mk1 Focus LX off his drive and into that spot, open his garage door and pulls out in his even newer even shinier Mk1 Focus Ghia.
5 minutes later he arrives back with a newspaper and puts both cars back in their original positions.
According to my mate, the Ghia was his 'special Sunday car'.

A variation on this is buying your old company car off the firm when it's replacement time comes, and the new one being the same model. I did this once because the old one stood at a silly low price on the books after four years depreciation and I would never have bought a better example for twice the price. I think the clue is in the statement "on the drive".
Two cars of identical spec are fine if you live in suburbia, and most of your driving is to the business park where you work, the retail park where you shop or the macdonalds drive thru/garden centre dependent on age.
If you you use a car for a variety of purposes, like continental holidays, blatting down lanes, parking in dodgy city centres for edgy nights out and you actually have hobbies instead of Sky TV subscriptions then being able to have 2 cars in the household means it makes sense to have cars with different strengths and weaknesses.
No prizes for guessing that we have 2 cars, with different characteristics...
