Recommend me a brilliant diesel engine

I picked up a diesel, first diesel ive owned in maybe 8 years.
Its utter crap (and im being generous).
So, can you recommend me a best of breed diesel engine that I can buy for under £8k?
I'm thinking one of the inline-6's from BMW?
Dont care about age, badge, economy or desirability. Manual or auto I'm not fussed (maybe auto would be nicer?).

BMW 6 cylinder diesels sound great and are reasonable on fuel, the 4 cylinder ones are great on fuel but sound awful just like any other 4 banger diesel.
They are all breathless at the top end but can surge along effortlessly in a high gear because of the great torque.
Were it me, id be looking at buying a 3 door 123d

Would be my pick too, just about scrape it with op's 8k budget.

If you aren't bothered about economy why bother with diesel? They're all crap to anyone that likes petrol.
Having said that, the 3.0L V6 Jag engine twin turbo is nice but mainly because it's mated to an 8 speed auto for seamless shove. Out of your price range so I'd be looking at an 8k V8 petrol barge for that money.

A cold start in any diesel is definitely dieselly but push a 30d or 35d (or 40d or 50d!) engine and they make a purposeful, deep throated growl. I like the sound myself.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

Actually I did read that these engines can chuck up the odd expensive problem but hopefully someone will be along soon to say that's bullsh**t. Also avaialale in the A8 and Touareg.
The VAG 3.0 V6 TDI seems a decent engine too. Plenty of Phaetons and other VAG stuff with that lump in budget.
I've got to wonder why though? Seems strange being so unconcerned about costs etc but insisting on a diesel...
