After watching harris hoooon the F40 and rave about it. I wondered what are the real world equivalents to get a flavor of that enjoyment. Say max £20k inc modified's.

Exige? Track prepped e36 m3?

Noble M12 (might be a little over budget)?

A Cerbera should be for consideration too at that price bracket.

Something that drives like an F40? Or just something that's fun to hoon on the track?

Not even similar to an F40 in concept

It's probably closer than the M3 mentioned in the OP, though. hehe

No but it is made from plastic which makes it a lot closer than an M3 will ever come...

MR2 Turbo and spend the balance modding it.

My Lotus 2-Eleven has the same performance stats as an F40 (which was made in 1989 - remarkable), but you can't get them for £20k and the engine delivery is linear, not a wait and whoosh turbo. So I reckon a VX220 turbo is the best (other than the 4cyl engine note and off boost performance), but you'd have to modify the hell out of it to achieve F40 performance - all possible within £20k though I reckon smile You'd be much closer to F40 weight at the end of it too than with my car. If you wanted the ridiculous driving position of an F40 that would require modifications too wink

lets not talk about on paper or in essence. Lets talk driving experience only. What would give Monkey the closest to that buzz without financial ruin?

Probably the MR2 Turbo. Mid engined, reasonably reliable. Fairly quick.

I think "most similar to drive" would be a Noble if you could get one, a tuned VX220 turbo if you couldn't. "Most fun on track" would probably be some kind of superlight Caterham.

How about a supercharged Exige which is just over budget

Or another lotus offering, again slightly over budget, a V8 Esprit! You cant get much closer than mid engine turbo V8 in red
