Hi,
I'm thinking about getting the wife a Skoda Fabia estate 1.6Tdi.
It would be new and she does do enough miles to warrant a diesel and have no DPF issues due to short journeys.
I'm not looking for advice an alternative cars but I am looking for feedback on the engine and the Fabia in general. The engine is the 1.6 TDi 75PS (slow!)

Just got the wife a new 1.2 SE Fabia 4 door. First time I drove it I was amazed. Very comfortable, smooth, rattle free and the ride is miles ahead of her old '59 plate Ka. You really could think you're in an Audi/Golf. Aircon, leccy windows, heated mirrors etc..
The engine's a 3 cyl, again, you'd never know. Sounds lovely, pulls as quick as she'll ever need. Plenty good enough on the mpg. Plenty of space for the shopping & kids. I'd quite happily jump in and spin the 200 miles to Devon to see the mother were it not for having a bigger motor at hand.
Dealer was brilliant. Only slight annoyance was the customer satisfaction surveys - too many of them.

Yes, it's not good. Mines in a 2011 Ibiza sport 100ps on 60,000 miles. If you are after fuel economy it's worse than a 2.0TDi coupled with less performance. From new it's been plagued with little niggles from DPF, rattles, coolant loss and electrical issues. In fact, it's back in Monday as the engine management light is on and the glow plug light is flashing.
To sum it up- if you want Eco A and B road motoring it does the job at about 50mpg. On a motorway (at a good pace) mid 40s is more like it.

Perfectly adequate for overtaking etc.
In the past year and 2 weeks, I've done 36,500 miles, an overall average of 55mpg, and the lowest I've got from a tank driving it like I stole it is 49mpg.
If I didn't mind irritating everyone else on the road it would do 70 (I have done it once to see)
Those are actual calculated in a spreadsheet figures, the computer overstates by about 5%
It hasn't used a single drop of oil, and nothing has gone wrong yet

Test drive one and see if you can cope with the slowness I guess!
(getting a test drive shouldn't be a problem, my local dealers offered to get one with the correct engine in specially for me, despite my being a company car driver. [they did actually get the order in the end though])

I can't comment on that engine, as we've got the 1.2TSI (105bhp) engine, with DSG. We do have an estate though.....which, for the size of the car, is stupidly big!
Overall it's a cracking little car, for what it is. General day to day driving is good and I've driven 350 miles to Cornwall in it, and it was good for that too....not quite as nice as my Volvo, but not bad either.
The only note of caution, is that I think they're bringing out a new Fabia in the next 12 months (I think) so just be aware residuals will probably take a bit of a hit.

I have a skoda fabia 1.6tdi 105PS, 2 years old, 27k roughly. ive always thought the throttle has a very subtle dead spot on gentle acceleration.
Recently it has failed to start after lots of coughing and spluttering - nothing logged on diagnostics according to dealer.
More recently it decided the water pump doesnt like sealing and deposited 2.5litres of water while parked overnight. new water pump fitted, seems fine for now.
it is used daily by the wife, i give the dpf a blowing out every so often but its never abused. generally id say the power is good, gearing is wrong but it doesnt have the torque to cruise at over 70mph, on motorway runs my 10yr old 320d touring gives better mpg.
overall, nice engine in 105ps trim, not without fault but ideal for cruising around town etc. not long journeys on regular basis

I have been in, but not driven, one of these.
Why buy a diesel? Did you miss the choking air in this country recently? Do everyone a favour and get a petrol car.
The engine is obviously a complete turd. Look at is specific output - about 50hp per litre. That is astonishingly bad for a modern car. It will pull like a fat bloke covered in his own puke shouting "I hate women".

I've the 105BHP variant in my late 2012 mk6 Golf 1.6 TDI SGetting 65.5mpg brim to brim over the last 15,000 miles. They're no rocketship but drive them steady and you'll get great economy. And theres enough oomph for overtaking.
Missus had one as a driving school car when they 1st came out.(105PS)
Kept throwing up warning lights and eventually it was tracked to part of the loom under the bonnet. Lacked torque, and the accelerator pedal seemed to travel a long way before it actually done anything(probably an eco driving thing). Seemed to spend a lot of time at Skoda in the time she had it and wasn't any more economical than our VRS unless you drive like miss Daisy. She's now got the 1.2 and its a whole lot better than the 1.6TDi except for fuel, but that's been offset by not breaking down and the price of petrol.
