brake pad disintegrated off metal backing

I braked and then found one if my brakes binding. Thankfully I was only 50 ft from home. Upon closer inspection and taking the caliper off it appears the braking material of the brake pad had come off entirely and clumped into one mass jamming on the brakes. Is this normal?

No but it can and does happen various causes of it, cheap pads are one or a binding brake can cause the pad to heat up and the pad to separate from the backing.

I've seen this on a rear caliper when the car had been driven with the handbrake on. The massive heat must've loosened the bond.

Personally I like my safety critical parts to come from the main dealer. Why risk your life for twenty quid?

Yes because the main dealers make there own brakes, um no they get them from brake manufactures same as all car parts stores but I would avoid getting stuff from ebay unless it's a reputable company.

Have seen a few cases of this in Car Mechanics mag.

I can't believe the manufacturers can get away with a safety-critical item like this breaking up. How come no-one's taking these to Trading Standards or the HSE??

Whe the friction material was both riveted and bonded to the backing plates I guess this would not be possible, though perhaps I'm thinking of drum brake shoes rather than disc pads??

Whenever I read about something like this my first thought is that it's probably a fake item.

There are a lot of established companies finding that fakes are getting into the supply chains at wholesalers and importers.
So they are being bought and sold in good faith as real ones.
