No idea what it's like in NZ but never heard of the VIN being required to import a car, generally you just do it and the authorities will read the VIN off the accompanying docs and off the vehicle itself.
So it's probably fishy.

Thanks TooMany2cvs for that comment, the one for sale doesn't have a visible VIN, but blow-me-down, my other car does and I never realised it.I'm guessing that if the numberplate and VIN can be just viewed and noted down by any passers-by, then it must be difficult to pull some kind of scam with just this info...?
The problem is, that with so many scams going on with regard to car buying, everyone is on their guard and looking for issues where there probably aren't any.
Many people will be reticent to give someone their bank details without realising that every time they write a cheque, that's exactly what they're doing.
Certainly worth asking the question on here though as someone may well have been screwed by the same scam.
