Hi all,

I currently run a BMW M135i and caught myself the other day having a look at the new mk7 Golf R.

I am struggling to find a manual R to have a test drive in does anyone know of any dealer in the south that has one!?

Am I crazy going from the BMW to the VW? I am caught in two minds here and would really appreciate some comments!

Cheers

The DSG is quicker and more frugal than the stick shift

Stick shift, we're not in America!

OP: do you want to do "big skids"?

Well 4wd for one thing (although that'd be a downgrade from RWD for me).

Yeh, I meant for the op as an individual.

The M135i is a great car but I am not the best driver, I do wonder if 4wd will be more all usable all season!

Or are you trying to justify a new car? Ask yourself honestly how many times 4wd would have meant you took the car out when you didnt in the bmw.

I think its Holly's giving him some good breathing though the pesky leaf springs make for interesting axle tramp and cornering

Visually more appealing the R over the m135i

If you're not a very good driver, have you considered buying something which isn't the very pinnacle of the range, and extremely quick to boot?

BMW has more cylinders, and the VW is only one letter e away from being a GolfeR, too close for comfort.

If you're anywhere near Farnborough, I'll happily take you out in my manual Golf R...

Evo says that the 'R' is better, but doesn't really spell out exactly why. For me the lease deal prices meant I didn't even bother testing the M135i as the Golf was miles cheaper. Apparently those deals are more or less at an end though - would be an interesting comparison if price was similar. BMW is ugly though, and whilst some people say the interior is nicer, I just don't see it myself.

New toy syndrome.

Golf R; very accomplished hatchback.
M135i; a big fluffy airship powered by fairy dust.

As the wife says, they are a completely different class of car that happens to have a similar style boot.

I'd suggest spending the money that it would cost you to change on a set of winter wheels/tyres and some advanced driving tuition. smile
