cambelt too cheap?

Hi guys, im getting work done from a friend reccomended mechanic.

The price seems a bit too cheap though almost too good to be true.

To get the cambelt tensioners and pulleys, a waterpump and coolant and the auxillarybelt he has quoted 170 pounds.

Looking at cambelts alone on europarts the cheapest is 66 then theres the rest of it.

Does this seem too good to be true?

What does that leave for buying stuff?

Surely he wont buy off ebay though because people can cancel last minute and he would have a nightmare having to send the parts back etc. How long will all the above work take?

Has he got a trade account somewhere, if so you can halve the prices at least.

I think the old dear was quoted the same on her 2002 1.2 clio. May be its a quick job on these. Would be a first for a Renault but may be surprised.

Late 2013. Was usual family mechanic who we go to and not someone working out of a home garage. Didnt get it done as car is being scrapped as soon as a problem need fixing (or belt snaps first)

Quick Google search says the same tbh price wise, the 1.2 is easy apparently compared to the 1.4 and 1.6.

How many hours would you say it should take a mechanic?

Sounds about right for a mechanic doing it on the side.

The kit will probably be around £40 at trade, plus the water pump and coolant (say £30).

So he would make £100 out of it, assuming it takes him two to three hours, its a reasonable rate to pay.

Did one today on a 2.0 vw bora, parts were £80.35 for gates belt and tensioner, water pump and gates aux belt, took 2 hours on the floor so as fiddles go, it seems ok price wise.

It's probably cheaper on parts than I just paid, plus I didn't get trade as I was away from home so he's probably making £50 an hour.

if you put it into a dealer/Indy you'd pay £300+

I did one on a freinds 1.2 a few years back. It's a piece of piss. As an aside the cambelt is tiny in terms of length.

First time I did the cambelt on wife's old fiat it took me about an hour, next time was down to 30 mins, I think the water pump was about £18...

How many pulleys do you need, there's normally only the tensioner to change. Are you having the drive belt tensioner done at the same time? I don't no the price of the tensioners and water pump but the belts would be around £12 each.
I'm getting my 1.2 Clio T belt done on Tuesday, quoted time on Autodata is about 2.3 hours, maybe 15 minutes longer to include the water pump.

Sounds ok to me, £90 to £100 in his pocket for 2 hours work isnt bad.
