Bmw 640d opinions

Hi all,

I'm looking at changing my car at the moment, and have been thinking about one of the above.

I took a brief test drive yesterday, and thought the car was a nice place to be and predictably quiet / refined etc.

I was wondering if any owners could give me their thoughts on ownership.

Bmw are offering 17 + k off these at the moment which makes them reasonable value.

I'm thinking of asking for a longer test drive - would this be normal enough? I was thinking for a days motoring or something?

I saw an se in vermillion red with the star wheels and thought it looked really nice. I know this isn't the accepted norm of black / white m spurt - is it wise opting for the se model? I am just looking for something calm, quiet and nice place to be / drive. I like my spine where it is!!

Any top tips - is it worth waiting for quarter end to get the best deals? Is there anything else I should be thinking about? Other cars worth checking out (i'm not interested in jaguar as i had a really bad experience with range rover)?

Sorry for all the questions - this is the most I have spent on a car before so I want to make sure I get it right!

If you can afford to run a petrol I wouldn't even bother looking at these, I'd go for a Mercedes SL.

£17k off is not enough imho.

I would rather pick up a used one for £30-35k or wait for the silly contract hire deals again.

2012 640d with 9k miles for under £34k.

My brother in law has a 640D MSport. They come with pretty much everything and his is standard other than 20's.

It's quiet and comfortable with effortless pace, and he regularly see over 40mpg in it.

Very nice car.

I forgot to add, drivethedeal and others were offering £22,000 off a new 640d m-sport and £20,000 off the 640i m-sport, which would be my choice.

Sorry fellas - it's the gran coupe I'm actually looking at, and to be honest besides being more practical I think they are better looking anyways.

I will likely go down the diesel route as I am tossing up whether to run through the business or not.

Got to agree the gran coupe is better looking. I'd choose the 640d over the 640i aswell... Brilliant engines!

A friend just picked up a 12 month old one for £35k and it's an awesome car.
But why's it called a 640 if it's a 3 litre engine?

It's just a BMW thing. Abit like the 123d, the 125 and the 335 etc.

There was the same deals on those, in fact a few quid more, but all relative to discount percentage.

I would be aiming at £22k discount on new, a year old will be just over £40k, but you will get BMWs much lower finance rate going new if you are using finance.

How many miles a year do you do?

How long do you want to keep it for?

You can contract hire for £390 a month plus vat with around £3.5k down.......

Don't think you could buy a new one for cash with a £30k discount and it cost you less over 2-3 years.
If you got £20,000 off a new one you are still going to loose £800+ a month if you bought it cash.

I am currently doing 20 - 25 k per year, and ownership wise I am looking at 3 years as I tend to start getting itchy feet by that point.

The lease deals you pointed out seem crazy cheap, I'll have to take a good look through them.

I personally think they're one one the ugliest cars put there, but each to their own I guess.

Make sure you get a quote for the mileage added at the start, often the excess mileage charge is far more expensive.

I know on the S Class we had going from 10k per year to 20k per year took it from £399 to £440 something, where as if we had added 20k extra we would have had to pay an extra £2200.

Also, it was a fair bit cheaper to do it over 2 years than 3 years. I guess easier to retail at 2 years old with 40k mile than 3 years old out of warranty with 60,000 miles on it.
