So there's been a few threads on here debating the merits of frequent oil changes, so to illustrate the point why your oil should be changed regularly, here is a series of images showing what happened to this BMW with only 60,000 miles under it's belt and 40,000 miles since it's last oil change.

Surely modern BMWs and their up to 20k service intervals, as most manufacturers are, shouldn't be that bad? How old is the car?

Sounds bad but I reckon my mates E46 320i would be like that...

Been serviced to spec...ish and has 120k miles but burns 1 litre of oil every 150 miles so hate to think where the solids are!

I'm pretty sure that was posted before, but a while back. It was cleaned out, reassembled and ran again iirc

To me that's a testament to the engineering of the thing that it survived that and soldiered on....

I remember seeing those pictures before the internet existed, in fact possibly even before I was born and BMW ever made a car.

It was at least 60k between changes, not total.

But it's not like it's anything important like an M135i or a VW camper van wink

Anyone not changing their oil after 40k miles deserves to own a (broken) BMW.

Without wading through the link, could the wrong spec oil be part of the problem there, such as a mineral oil when a full synthetic is required?

Not changing oil for 60k is a bit of an extreme example to be honest.
