Garage does work without approval
Discussion
So today the garage I was trying out did the work and didn’t ask me to approve the price beforehand. It was not too bad this time as I would have done the same and it was a fair price, BUT do others have the same experience?
It has happened once before at a different garage and they brought a battery I didn’t want, but difficult to move the car without a battery so had to take their one.
I just don’t like not being given the choice.
What do others think to this?

Get quote for specific work - if there are problems give me a call to discuss.
If you find anything anything else that you think needs attention, again call me before starting on any other work.
Hasn't let me down so far.
This. Or "I have such and such symptoms as a problem on the car, fix it unless it costs >£xxx"If you find anything anything else that you think needs attention, again call me before starting on any other work.

I trust my garage very much and know they won't just say "well, we can just do what we like to that value". last time I said "fix it as long as it's <£750" it turned out to be £130"

And this person deserves to be successful. I trust my garage very much and know they won't just say "well, we can just do what we like to that value". last time I said "fix it as long as it's <£750" it turned out to be £130"

I've dealt with a few garages, who tell 'find' things whilst doing the first job, and you can't prove that they didn't just break it.
OOr maybe I'm Paranoid.

I once took my old S3 in for a service, and commented that the fuel consumption had got a little bit worse. When I went to collect it they had fitted a new mass airflow meter, costing several hundred pounds. They said to try it for a few days. I did, the fuel consumption didn't improve, and I said I didn't want to pay as I never asked for it to be done. They said fine, didn't even ask to swap back my old one.

When I had the Tuscan I used to tell the garage to give me a buzz if anything needed doing over XXX amount. We could then discuss what it was and the options, never had a problem with them....well apart from when the wife spotted the bill!
Thats because if they knew they treated you right, they had a customer for life
or at least whilst you kept the car!I once had a garage quote £300 for a water pump, rang to say come collect and when I got there bill was £500 as it took them ages to get a seized bolt off. I was young and stupid so paid it
Took my integrale in to get valve work done around 15 years ago, I dont want to name and shame.
We decided a price, I went offshore, I came back to collect the car. Was handed with a bill double the agreed price. A load of other unnessasary work had been completed.
I couldnt afford the bill, he wouldn't release the car.
Eventually after speaking to my solicitor the car was given back with the promise that the remainder of the costs paid at the next pay check.
I went offshore again, came back to collect the car, the car was sitting with the drivers window down, mud up the sides, dirty footwell.
I got 2 miles before the head gasket blew. Took it back again, had another row with them. left the car again.
