It is coming near to the time when I should be seriously looking for viable options as a first car. (Perhaps stupidly) I am determined not to get your run of the mill generic boy racer car which has lead to some problems. After being gently deterred away from Triumph Heralds by my dad I have moved on to convertibles/cabrios, notably the golf and the Peugeot 206. These made perfect sense to me; fun to own, not too expensive to run and buy and slightly different. Until I checked the insurance- they were £1500-£2000 more per year than their hatchback counterparts. This didn't really make sense to me, the cars are bigger (safer in a accident?), slower than their hatchback sisters and not exactly hooligan inspiring. It's not like they'd be particularly unsafe, (the golf has a full on roll hoop!) or quick! Anyway, I was wondering if you could shed some light onto this and even steer me towards more sensible options tongue out

Thanks in advance

I would have jumped straight in and said MX5 - but insurance might be an issue.

a few younger drivers i know seem to get good quotes for large engined old BMWs - one for example pays half as much to insure his 330 than he did his Peugeot 207 1.4 !

And the two seat aspect tongue out I did look at E30's and E36's and used a comparison website for ball park figures and they were rather(!) high, and I reckoned the fuel bill would kill me :[

If you're set on a vert how about a Pug 206 CC?

They did one with a 1.4/1.6 engine IIRC and they have rear seats for double limb amputees?

Only slight issue is people may question your sexuality....

Not a bad option but there is the chav factor and the upfront cost is a tad out of my range

If you want to be different, why don't you have a look at something like a Honda Jazz or a Ford Ka?

Very cheap to run, and why not keep that for a year, suck up the insurance and when the renewal comes have a look for something that you want? It's what I did and it worked out well. For a 160hp Turbocharged Fiat Grande Punto I pay £700? My first year was £1500.

Sometimes, getting a years NCB is worth it's weight in gold.

That is looking like the most likely option, except with a Skoda Fabia

Skoda.. that'll work, then if you keep it for a year you get NCB and you're in a postition to afford a better car (if you want) Also, 1 tip, don't pay your insurance monthly, you get hammered for it.

Have you considered one of these:

Have a look on YouTube to see its party trick.

I had one a couple of years ago with the 1.6 VTEC. It cost me £900.

This is what I bought for my eldest daughter for her 18th, all the toys, leather, etc. For about 50p. All of her friends with their new EuroBoxes are very jealous, and they cost about ten grand laugh

I'll vouch for the Fabia, friends have had issues with French cars, Ford's and Vauxhalls but my Fabia hasn't put a foot wrong. It's the 1.2 3 cylinder so cheap insurance (I'm 17 and my insurance is cheaper than most) but I covered a 250 mile round trip yesterday on almost exclusively motorways and it was great, comfortable and returned 44mpg sitting happily at 70 most of the way. I'm over the moon with it and think they're incredibly underrated.

Another vote from me, only £500 to insure with 2 years ncb, aged 20.
