Where did you but it from a few months ago? Was it private, dealer?

(It doesn't sound unreasonable to me though)

Doesn't sound like a bad offer to me for a 9 and a half year old small car.

ok well you have to look at it this way...

Every owner on a car makes it lose value.

Every extra mile regardless of how many make a difference.

The dealer taking it in will have some re marketing costs whether thats 150 in auction fees or if he decides to sell it much more (i.e. washing it, advertising it, servicing it - if not a service he will at least have to healthcheck the car)

Its taking space on his forecourt till its either sold or taken to the auction

Its taking his money up till he does what he wants with it.

Finally your car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it... so this dealer may only offer you 2200 but another one may offer you more...

In all if you want top dollar sell it privately and put up with the tyres kickers and test pilots etc...

Also be aware that if you are negotiating on the price of the car your buying it may make him (the dealer) more agressive on the price of your PX as the dealer needs to at least cover his costs if not make a profit...

So whether that profit comes from your PX or the car he sells you that is his aim...

If you want a good indication of what your car is worth type the details into we buy any car and see what they say as they use the same guide (CAP) to price cars as dealers... If there price comes back at a much higher value the dealer is either sticking you or there is something wrong with your car that webuyanycar wont see till you try to sell it to them then they will knock down the price at that point...

FYI i used to be in the Motor trade so know it inside out including what is reasonable to ask for and whats not...

If they sell it for around £3300 then £1100 is probably not prep it for sale.

Every dealer has a buying price and a selling price.

I reckon if you part ex'd instead of buying you would have got about the same.

Usually you find the larger the dealer the lower the part ex price you will get.

A friend of mine went to a main dealer about part ex-ing a BMW 1 series worth about £5k as a private sale

Big main dealer who had a quick look around it and offered £3k, she then took it down to another smaller dealer who offered her £4650.

These big knobs don't have fancy showrooms for nothing.

The moral of the story has always been if your in no hurry to sell and aren't scared of a few smart ass tyre kickers then hold out for a private sale.

Wouldn't it be worth selling the car privately? This way you will probably be able to get close to the price you paid for it in the first place.

Cars loose money and it's not the fault of car dealers, you do have the option of not selling it to him, if indeed you want to sell it at all.

Sounds like a fair offer then. Perhaps you overpaid?

If you are part exing, focus on the cost to change, not on the trade in value...

Hi

I understand he has to maintain profits but it seemed like a dramatic drop in price seeing as i got it for 3300 afew months ago
So dealer give you £2200 for it. Valet £50, budget for preparatory costs and fresh MOT £200, House charge to cover electric, advertising, rent, rates, fuel, heating, staffing costs £150, VAT on gross margin scheme £200.

So that takes us to £2750. He puts it on at £3295 and people expect a "discount", so they chip him back to £3000.

So thats £250 net profit?

You bought at retail price, and are trading in at trade price.
