Do marked lanes not mean anything anymore? Caution: rant

My commute consists of travelling around two large roundabouts in Hertfordshire. Both have 4 well marked lanes with pictures/diagrams to explain this phenomenon when approaching. But the amount of people I see just picking any old way around the roundabout and narrowly missing others is astounding!!!

Today a man went a across all 4 lanes just going where he wanted causing me to do an emergency stop, it was achingly close to a big accident. I keep seeing this more and more nowadays. Has anyone else noticed an increase in this really p**s poor driving?

As long as they continue to miss each other what's to rant about - not that it was much of a rant really, more like a whinge.

You're lucky. Locally, we have one roundabout with road markings contrary to HC. On approach, it's DC, with road markings.About 10 yards away marking inside as turn left, and outer as right/straight on . Then road "bell mouths" into three lanes. Inner, left, middle straight on and outer, right. Of course, those who drive by HC, get caught out, and those who know and intend to go straight on, move to the outer lane, and those who get caught out (although driving by HC), end up sitting in the left lane trying to move over. There used to be a similar situation on the Ricoh Island in Coventry ,approaching from the M6 side ,where the outer land forced drivers into a right turn on the island .It's since been rectified .

I know someone that regularly cuts from lane 4 to 1 on a big roundabout in Herts. He gets away with it due to being a more efficient driver than those in the other lanes. I'll have a word and tell him he's a naughty boy.

Worst roundabout I know is one in Ilford where you get half way around to find a very worn out give way line as people entering from the left have right of way over you despite you being on the roundabout. Dangerous and always near misses not helped by the poor road markings

OP has a point though. I've come to the conclusion people don't look more than 2 foot infront. The number of times I've queued over the Dartford crossing lately and used a completely empty booth when everyone else is queuing. The last time I had to wait for the guy infront to push into the queue on his right so that I could continue through the empty booth that was right in front of him. Nobody followed either.

A roundabout near here has markings which if you follow, and everyone else did, would lead to a nice smooth progress for all cars. Trouble is, so many drivers ignore them it just does not work.

I only know of the one accident, and that was not on the roundabout at all, but on an exit route where a powerful car attempted to climb a lamp post. And the road is pretty straight too!
