Looking at something like this for the wife:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261450105158?_trksid=p20...

I have no idea what the differences are between the 3.0 and 2.4 v6 - apart from a few hp.

Either will be fine - anything to look out for/avoid for the A4 from circa 2004/4?

No in depth knowledge of the Audi engines specifically. My experience of Straight six BMWs has always been that the bigger engines used a negligible amount more fuel but with a sizeable amount more power and torque. Go for the 3.0, be easier to sell on and you'll enjoy it more when you inevitably borrow it.

Be very carefull of multitroincs from that era (google it) The 2.4 is a lovely smooth engine.

Didn't these with the V6 suffer cam chain rattle after a few miles? Go for the 3 litre.

Anyhow, I have one of this shape in Quattro form with the 1.8T with a manual box on a 02. It's a fantastic car, everything works and the build quality is first class.

Driven the 2.4. Not too bad.
3.0 at the time was regarded as a bit weak. It replaced the 2.8 which wasn't a bad motor. Then the 3.0 came along and the performance figures in the road tests, as well as the comments, were weak.
30 valves, I'm sure.

The 3 litre is a cambelt:

I don't know if fuel consumption is a concern? The 3 litre Quattro I drove gulped it down and I wasn't raking it and was 90%> M-way and dual carriageway.

I have the 2.4 v6 turbo diesel.
It a great engine.
It's pretty quiet, and being a v6 the noise you do hear is nicer than the regular four pot drone.

I test drive several models when I bought it.
The diesel and 2 petrols (I can remember the exact engines).
I surprised myself and chose the diesel.
