Never thought to ask before but for the past few years I have remained a named driver on Mrs Expatboy's car in the UK. I am non-resident in UK for tax purposes yet drive in the UK when on leave. I'm now told you have to be resident in UK to have car insurance? Am I driving illegally then?

I think it depends on what the insurance company says. As a named driver and not the policyholder they may not care.

I can't recall now what happens when you declare a named driver but if you have to declare their address then I would think that your expat address should be declared.

If they don't ask for it then perhaps it doesn't matter.

In those circumstances a call to the insurance company would clear it up and deal with the disclosure elements.
