Re Taking Test?

Over heard something on the news about pensioners re taking the driving test (wasn't really listening) but it got me thinking.

Why doesn't everyone have to re take it every say, 5 years or so? I passed my test shortly after turning 17 and no one will ever re examine my driving again for awareness, reactions or general ability and safety to be on the road. Even our plant operators at work have to be re examined and new licences issued so why not bring it in for road licences?

How would this be feasable with the number of licensed drivers in this country ?

What would happen to someone with bike, car, HGV & PSV licenses ? Four tests ?

Twelve penlty points accrued in say five years would be a re test for that group if I had my way.

I quite agree it will not be easy to manage. If its all about "road safety" surely by re examining drivers ability on a regular basis it might make roads safer? My ability at work is assessed yearly with training given where needed as im sure many others are. So why not our roads?

A 1 hour safe driving assessment every so many years is perfectly doable as it would not be a DSA test so could be done by approved assessors such as ADIs or observers/tutors in the AD groups

As it would be an assessment and not an instruction type course the law would not need to be changed much to accommodate it

Safe driving in a car usually means the driver has the same sort of thinking if they drive other vehicles
