I'm currently trying to sell my project car; a Peugeot 206 CC in favour of a new project. I only have around £2000 to spend on the car and I'm looking for something fun to drive and that I can convert into a trackday / sports car.
The only caveat is that it needs to be able to fit in the garage. It can't be any bigger than the Pug (wifes orders) is the only restriction I have.
Cars I've been considering include a classic mini which I've been put off as rust is such an issue. Other options include Renault Clio 182 but mooching around t'interweb there isn't much more to squeeze out of them, albeit a popular one for modifying. I've got something of a taste for turbo's so ideally something I could strap one onto or had one already.
I did find a few US based ideas but I'm looking for something a bit more suitable for the UK buyer.

If you want to be able to cheaply modify it for power, get something with forced induction. An idea of budget might be useful. 
Not really sure on budget for upgrades as it'll just be as and when I've got spare cash. The pug got a grand spent on it over a year but that was just keeping it on the road.I've just picked up a Mk3 MR2 Roadster needing an engine. I've also just picked up a cheap Corolla T-Sport. I'm going to fit the 190bhp 2zz engine out of the Corolla into the MR2, along with the 6 speed gearbox. It's apparently a pretty straight forward job as far as engine swaps go.

172 . Abandon any thoughts of making it have more power and spend your pennies on making it weigh less.
Mx5 - again , dont bother trying to get more power unless youve got a few grand for FI - best place to spend money is chassis bracing, brakes and suspension. Its possible the mx5 might be too big- they're quite a long car really.

I wouldn't focus on more power as such as you can have yourself plenty of fun with either 100 or 250bhp.
For the money I'd say a renaulsport clio or an mx5 would be the best bet overall - you'll get a 'decent' car for £2k rather than a shed of something like an MR2 turbo, which will be important if it's getting caned.
If you can stretch the budget up another grand there's civic type Rs as well, although it will be bigger than the peugeot.
