Did i dream this road?
Discussion
I seem to recall a story/picture of a house in the middle of a motorway. Story goes that the developers wanted to bulldoze the house to make way for the road, the owner refused to sell/give it up, so they just went around it, with the house in the middle of 6 lanes of traffic, 3 on each side of it.
Did this ever happen, or did i make it all up?

Every time I drive that bit of road I think to myself, surely its better ti take the compulsory purchase money than have 6 lanes of motorway at bedroom window level just a few metres away.http://www.bbc.co.uk/bradford/content/articles/200...

Now read the link.
Under current CP rules it would have been purchased anyway, it was obviously different back in the day, although I have been through CP registers from that time when all sorts was bought unecessarily.

It's covered in this documentary - 'The secret life of the Motorway'.
Scroll forward to about 15mins in.
Apparently, the ground the house is stood on was too unstable to support the motorway, so they shored it up and built it around the house.

With the M62, why couldn't they have just diverted both lanes around the same side of the farm?
Good question. I believe above it is too steep and rocky, below is the same and there is a reservoir.Maybe by the time they got that far and realised it was too late to divert, probably down to budget as per...
