"Cargo Cult" repairs

I keep reading here and hearing from friends about garrages replacing parts and not fixing a fault and suggesting something new instead of correctly identifing the real root cause of the problem. I used to think it was deliberate way to run up the bill.

However is very similar to the Cargo cults where pacific people copy things done by soliders to get cargo without understanding the underlying cause and effect. It reminds me of the saying "Never attribute to malice something which is adequately explained by stupidity"

Why what do you think Deliberate Greed or Unconcious Ignorance?

Its down to too many black box components and imprecise error codes, if the obd reports an ABS fault the garage will look at components in that system. To be fair it is an engineering solution swap things with known good components the problem is it is slow and expensive.
